Julu Farewell
To Governor Is
Imposing Scene
Durban, South Africa. The chief of
the Zulu nation, his ringed headmen '
and many minor chiefs, recently as
sembled in the court house at Maritz
burg and delivered speeches of affec
tion and esteem for Lord Sidney Char
les Buxton, retiring governor-general
of South Africa, and , Lady Buxton,
who accompanied him on the farewell
visit. There was an enthusiastic de
mostratio, The bout hous was packed with the
courtly, dlglfled Zulus, some of them
in frock' coats and wearing medals re
ceived for bravery in the war, but oth
ers, also wearing medals won on Eu
ropean battlefields, were clad only in
the primitive Zulu fashion. .
Chief Manaolwandhll, son of Cete
wayo, as a chief of the Royal Zulu
blood voiced his thanks for the "bene
ficent British rule.'' Then Chief Mini
spoke. He said:
"The Zulus gave asslstaonce In the
great war and if assistance is needed
again they are prepared to die for
their king and "country." '
The Kovernor-general thanked them
for their excellent behavior during the
war. and for their active assistance. AS
he finished speaking .the "bayete" sa
lute rang out, anthem like, in a final
farewell. ' . ,
Metal Thieves ;
Despoil Statues
Breslau, July 20. Unable to check
the despoiling by metal thieves ot
monuments in the public parks, the
police have decided to remove to
places of safe-keeping . all bronze
statuary which can be easily trans
ported. Among the statues of great
men placed under "protective arrest"
are those of Germany's nature poet
Eichendorff and the composer of war
songs Koerner.
A huge statue of; Diana has. been
mutillated, the vandals having
wrenched off her spear. They tried
without success to cut off her arms.

Many brass and bronze inscription
tablets have been stolen.
