himself needs no introduction to the
average fan of the country. Every

the big moustache is well known. As
funny as he is on the screen he is
even funnier on the stage. The best
bits of his latest pictures have been
transferred to the stage and have lost
nothing in the transition.
Conklin was for a long time the fea

theatres of New York City so he is not

before seen on any stage. His version
of the vampire's dance is the hit of
the show.
Chief in support to Conklin is Art
Penny, who for a long time prior to
his entering the service of Uncle Sam
was one of the most popular vaude
ville performers in the country. He
has been featured on the largest cir
cuits of the United States and Canada
and he has lost none of his ability to
make people laugh in his short vaca

Conklin in their convict number is one
of the features of this unusual little
revue. In addition to his ability as a
comedian Penny owns a most won-

Iron Shutters
Chief Cause of
Levant Riots
Constantinople. Iron shutters h.
probably caused more riots, massacres
ana pogrons in the Levant than poli
tical agitators. All shops in the near
cast are provided with rolling iron
shutters which work in iron grooves.
When they are banged down they
make as much noise as a machine gun.
Every time there is rumor of any sort
of trouble some timid merchant slams
down his shutters to protect his plate
glass; AVithout investigating the cause,
other merchants follow instantly with
such a clatter that the public becomes
panicky and rushes about trying to
discover the cause of the flurry,
At such moments, excited croww
will credit any rumor which is put Into
circulation. Pickpockets avail them
selves of such opportunities. Soapbox
orators, street fakirs, and magicians
gather crowds by this device. In any
Turkish city the circulation of a ru

against Christians will cause all the
Armenian -and Greek shops to close

English King :
Tried To Sever
German Empire
Kemptcn, Bavaria. England's Jate
king, Edward VII, once tried to per
suade Emperor Franz Joseph of Aus
tria , to break away from Germany,
says General Conrad von. Hoetzen
dorff, former commaBder-in-chief of
the Austrian army. The general n
clared in a speech here the other day
that the fidelity of Frana Joseph to
the German-Austrian alliance was of
ten questioned, but in spite of many
temptations, he had remained faithful
to the pact. --
"Fifteen years ago," he went on,
"when I had just become chief of tht
general staff, the emperor remarked
to me in his peculiar way, 'Do you
know that King Edward has been vis
iting me at Ischl and earnestly trying
to wean me away from our alliance,
with Germany? But I refused.'
"The emperor saw the war danger
coming, but he kept true to the allian

30 years in peace and war will never
die out. Such a country us Germany
can never perish, and Austria will al
ways stand by her side." ,
