The morning; hours were devoted
to a patriotic program of songs and
recitations and a children's drill that
did great credit to those in charge
of the program. C. C. Chapman con
cluded the morning program with a
brief but Intensely patriotic address
In which he called attention to the
hardships braved by the pioneers in
carving out the Oregon empire from
. the wilderness of the northwest and
urged the present generation to up
hold the traditions of those who had
: blazed the way.

Governor Olcott pitched the first ball
with Editor Chapman on the receiving-
end of the battery.

Dallas, July 7. Heinrlch T. Neu-
feld of Canton, Okla. is visiting with
Garett Harder of Dallas.
W. F. Van Nuya left today for
Sherman county to spend his two
weeks vacation with his brother. He
procured an. anglers license before
leaving and expects to do consider
able fishing.
Attorney D. E. Fletcher, republi
can nominee for Joint legislator for
Polk county, was a business caller .n

Fred J. Wagner, who recently pur
chased the old skating rink, has re-
odeled It and opened it as a first
class garage where a full line of au
tomobile accessories and oils will be
sold, and general automobile repair
ing done.
Mrs. C. B. Stone, wife of a former
mayor of Dallas, and her three chil
dren, visited Mrs. Bertha M. Bennett
over the week end. The Stones are
now residents of Palo Alto. Cal.
Mra A. V. R. Snyder returned Sun
day from McMinnville where she has
been visiting her children.
Dr. I A. Bollman reports the
birth of a daughter to Mr. and Mrs.
James Hayes of North Dallas.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Groves and
Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Burner spent sev
eral days in the Grande Ronde coun
try fishing,
Oscar Peterson and mother, Mrs.
Louisa Peterson, moved to Salem this
week. Mrs. Peterson had been a res-j
ldent of Dallas for 47 years.
Although the grading has all been
done and everything else got in read
iness, none of the concrete walks or
dered by the city council several
weeks ago have been laid. The delay
Is due to Inability of the contractors
to secure cement with which to
make concrete.
Mrs. Ella' Yates of Astoria is spend
lng a few days in Dallas as the guest
ol her parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. U
Butler. This is Mrs. Yates' first visit
to Dallas In many years. Her girl
hood days were spent here.
Miss Florence Walker, who has
been teaching at The Dalles accom
panied by Miss Hazel Schoot of Con-1
don, spent a few days in Dallas visit-!

Mrs. J. H. Hibbs, after a delightful
winter spent In Dallas and other
joints, with her parents, Mr. and
Mra C. W. McDevitt, returned July
1 to her home In Alaska.
The fine residence of C. S. Keller
on West Court street, was complet
ed this week and the Keller family
moved Into the house on Tuesday.
Mr. Keller is superintendent for the
Willamette Valley Lumber company.
There was an all day old fashion
ed gospel meeting at Bridgeport on
July 4. Picnic dinner was served on
the ground and Rev. Glenn Siefarth,
recently of California, was the speak
er of the day.

Fred Gibson and wife, resident of
Eola hills were business callers at
Dallas recently. Mr. Gibson has Just
harvested his berry crop, getting 8
tons of gooseberries and 4 tons of
strawberries, so will leave soon for
Taft where they will enjoy a two
weeks vacation. !
Dallas garage men received a 10
000 gallon consignment of 56 percent
gravity gasoline which will be sup
plied to users in this vicinity.

Attorney J. N. Helgerson and wife
left recently tor a hike to the Siletz
country. They expect to fish on tha
headwaters of that river for several
days. '
About twenty five school teachers
are In Dallas taking the teachers ex
aminations while 135 of the .teach
ers attending summer normal at Mon
mouth are struggling with the quis at
that place. Supt. Jo,-l;ih Wills is veryj
busy superintending the work in

DAIXAS. SOCIAL NOTES
Dallis, Or., July 7. A party consist
ing of Mrs. May Tatom of Tacoma,
Wash., Mrs. Henry Gillam of Perry- i
dale and Mrs. Flnley Edgar of Crowley
were In Tillamook last week visiting
with friends and relatives. This was
their first trip to that country in over
twenty years. All three of the women
were residents of Tillamook when
girls and have many friends in that
section. They also visited In Wheeler,
Nehalem, Mohler and Bay City.
The Sew-and-So club met with Mrs.
Maurice Dalton Wednesday afternoon
and the members were delightfully en
tertained. The rooms were aglow with
roses and sweet peas, combined with
greenery. After a few hours spent in
sewing, dainty refreshments were
served. Those present were: Mrs.
Simon Grlndheim, Mrs. Harold H.
Rich, Mrs. C. L. Foster, Mrs. Leif Fin
seth, Mrs. Vera Strayer, -Mrs. W. O.

Friends' Club MMs.
Mrs. Alice Dempsey was a delightful
hostess last Thursday afternoon when
she presided as hostess to the mem
bers of the Friends' club at her home
on Lyle street. The afternoon was
spent In sewing and fancy work, after
which a delicious two-course luncheon
was served at an appointed table,
which was centered with a bowl of
deep red roses. The luncheon was
served by Mrs. Willis Simonton, Mrs.
Ralph Morrison of Falls City and Mrs.
John R. Allgood. The members of
the club present were: Mrs. Harriet L.
Veazie, Mrs. Hulda Savery, Mrs. S. P.
Riggs, Mrs. Sam Telherow, Mrs. Mar
tin Burns, Mrs. William Kersey, Mrs.
Frank Collins, Mrs. Hayter, Mrs. Alice
Dempsey, The invited guests were Mrs.
Willis Simonton, Mrs. Ralph Morrison
and Mrs. John B. Allgood.
Mrs. V. P. Fiske, who has been on
an extended visit in Washington, re
turned last night to her home in Dal
las. Mrs. Fiske visited with relatives
In Spokane artd various other points.
Her daughter, Miss Roxana, who ac
companied her, will remain with her
aunt for a few weeks longer.
Mrs. Sallie Thomas of Omaha, Neb.,
and Mrs. Hastings of McMinnville vis
ited their cousin, Dewellen Moore at
the Garwood place Thursday. Mrs.
Thomas is a teacher in Omaha. She
expects to spend her vacation in Oregon.

Cloverdale, Or., July 7. Several
families from here motored over to
Stayton, Saturday, to attend the cele
bration. On Wednesday evening Mr. and
Mrs. M. Fliflet returned home from
Washington, where they have been
visiting relatives for the past few
weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kunke, Hazel
Craig and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Moore
of Salem left here for the beach on
Friday evening to spend a few days.
Mr. and Mrs.. Ray Farris, who have
been visiting Mrs. Farris' mother, Mrs.
Herring, at Eugene are to return home
today.
