Preparations to
Mix vViih Aggies,
By taking advantage of the two
xunny days last week snd plodding!
long in the rain the res! of the time. I
the Willamette baseball team is speed
ing up lt play In preparation for the
games with O. A. C. Friday and Sat
urday. The rainy weather haa been a
handicap, however. In that no prac
tice iramea have, been ployed, so that
the strength of the team a whole
la an unknown quantity. However,
one or two practice games will prob
ably be played against the Moose Jaw
team, which is practicing on Sweet
land field.
It Is certain that Willamette will
hare a good fielding team, the Infield
being particularly strong. The ques
tion the fans are saklng, however. Is
whether they ran hit. and how Coach
M"ithews' pitching staff is going to
stand up against conference batsmen.
Jarksnn looks good hut has never
pitched college ball. Brewster is a
veteran pitcher, but probably cannot
pitch nine Innings. Irvine and Page
can throw, and either might be de
veloped Into a heaver If he were not
needed so badly in the infield. War
ren and Corbett are hardly up to
standard as college pitchers. It seems
to be tin to Jackson to do the bulk
of ttie heaving, and the fans are
watching to see how he pans out.
The stick work of the team' Is the
other misty detail wnlch will have
to be cleared up by a real game. For
the past two years Willamette teams
have not been wonderful hitters, and
fhlle most of the men look good In
practice, nobody can tell yet what the
batting order will look like. If the
men get their batting eyes working.
however, and If the plrchlng is up to
standard, the airtight Infleldlng which
the team has shown In practice wlllilor "lx our "n wuges or 17
land them In the win column In mot!aIld mmt ot the mine no attempt
if the games.

Mines Suspend
Operations In
Butte District
Butte, Mont., April 20. Mining
j operations in the Butte district prac
tically were suspended this morning.
Only a rew miners succeeded In get
ging through the lines of the pickets
M""ed by the 8trlKe'' w'o are asking
was made to hoist ore. An exception
was the Elm Orlu, a W. A. Clark
property, where sixty men out of six
hundred reported this morning.
The strikers were well organized
and pickets to the number ot about
700 covered all approaches to the
mines and swarmed over the hill on
which most of the big shufts are lo
cated. These men stopped all miners
who sought to reach the shafts. A
particular effort was made to turn
back hoisting engineers and pump
men. Although in some instances
very late, these men managed to get
through to the mines. Neither the
engineers nor pump men have joined
the I. W. W. strike declured yesterday
morning against the . mining com
panies. No arrests were mude this
morning and only a few cases of act
uul ussault reported. Miners who want
ed to work for the most part remain
ed awny from the hill with the result
that there were few clashes, The mln
er who were injured lust night are
reported to be resting well today and
none of them Is In a serious condition
At I. W, W. heudiiuurters today
strike leaders reported that the strik
ers were thoroughly organized and
that they proposed to close the mines
down and keep them down. No de
mands have been made on the com
panies by the strikers. The streets of
llutte nre crowded wllh idle men to
day but the city Is orderly and only
a few cases of assault have come to
the notice of the authorities.

The housing corporation, which has,
been financed by banks and business
men. has under consideration a plan
to build a row of model homes in
Grant Park, on the lake front. Ex
amples of many types of standardized
homes would be erected, furnished and
surrounded by settings of trees and
shrubbery so that prospective purchas

Attempts hav been made to check
rent profiteering by co operation of
the city council and the Cook county
real estate board which investigated
complaints and, when Increases were
found to be excessive, advised the land
lord to withdraw his demands. In gen'
erul the investigators have allowed an
increase of about 30 per cent over last
year's rentals. ,
A proposal was made to erect
scores of portable houses but the car

to that plan even if the houses came
from union fatcoiies. j
