The firt tD toward permanent road Improve ment to be made In this vicinity was taken yesterday morning wnen uie county commissioners began work on the SUverton-Mt. Angel road. Heavy trucks are at work hauling rock for the surface and the road roller Is put ting in ln condition for .the hard sur face finish. According to the progra.V. the road will be paved from ML Angel to the Abiqua river and macadam will be used on the remainder of the road to the Silverton- Salem road at Bow en's corner. A movement Is also un derway to improve the road between here and Gervals. Work of establishing a paving plant in this city is in progress. Mt Angol people are unanimous in the determi nation to secure better roads in all di rections from the ctiy and the anticipa tion of higher taxes by reason of the improvement is no discouragement. They believe in lncreased valuation by increased taxation. .1 .. Potato Baying In Mt Angel Section Completed Today Mt. Angel, Or., Apr. e. w hen the Fred Schwab commission company ships out a carload of potatoes today it Will finish the potato buying for this season, and practically all the spuds In this Prt of the country, have been picked up. Since the season openc.1 last September the company has paii out to the farmers of this vicinity more than $321,000 for potatoes alone. Most of the potatoes have been shipped to their office at Stockton, California, which is in charge of Joseph Schwab." J. J. Keber, cashier of the Bank of Mt. Angel, and P. B. M!s Ethel Craig, principal of the ifhtol near Quinaby, spent Easter here with her mother, Mrs. J. D. Craig. Mrs. W. F. Wright has hef aunt from Missourla viisting her. She arrived hern last Wednesday and is delighted with the climate. M!ss Marcia Edwards of Albany In spending the week-end here with her aunt, Mrs. W. J. Kadley. ' ' Messrs. New Bridge Asked To Replace Old In Silverton Suburb Silverton, Or., Apr. 6. Numerous citizens of Geiser's addition to Silver ton appeared before the city council at a meeting held last evening and asked that body to rebuild the lower bridge on Silver creek which was con demned nearly two years ago and has since been closed. . In the present con dition of the structure residents of that part of the ctiy are great inconven ienced, and the lives of school childroi, are endangered from the fact that they pass over the railroad bridge two or three times a day In going to and from school. . . Under provisions of Silverton's eld and Inadequate city charter the coun cil seems to find no method to pursuo in a manner to relieve the serious sit uation, and unless the taxpayers of the city are willing to vote a special tax for the construction of the bridge, con ditions are not likely to be changed very soon. Woodburn To Form Community Club; Salem Men To Aid With the aid of Manager T. E. Mo Croskey of the Salem Commerce J club, Walter Denton and Luther J. Chapin, live wire members of tho lo cal organization, Woodburn, at a meeting of the citizens there Thurs day night, will form a community club. It Is planned to affiliate the community club with the Marion county community federation. Arrangements are being made io take the Cherrian quartet to Wood burn that night to entertain during the meeting. Enthusiastic support of a commu nity club around Woodburn haB been high lately; and a large attendance to the meeting is anticipated, accord ing to word received today by Mr. McCroskey. . ; Winnipeg Strike Leaders Sentenced Winninecr. Man.. April 6. Five convicted lenders of Wlnnlneifs gen eral strike were sentenced here today to one year In jail on each of the six seditious conspiracy counts against them and to six montJis on trie one count charging that they committed a common nuisance. Sentences will run concurrently. Tho five were William Ivene, W. H Pritchard, R. J. Johns, Alderman John Queen and Georgo Armstrong. A sixth defendant, R. fa. Bray, who was convicted of the charge of com mitting a common nuisance, was sentenced to six months in Jail. Angel, Or., Apr. 6. The founda tion for the new $150,000 public school building was completed yesterday and the brick work will begin In a days. When completed the building will he the most lip to date district school building In Marion county. .-; It will contain twelve rooms and an auditorium, with basement and the walls will ne made of white brick, moat of which was furnished by Spo kane. The entire co.-rt of the buildin? will be met by ; public contribution. While it will be used as a county school Us structure will be no burden to tax payers of the county. Plans are being made for the laying of the cornerstone and it Is expected that this will occur about the 15th of April. - ' ' Community Club Selects Leaders To Be Candidates . Silverton, Or., Apr. 6.
