day under the direction of the govern
or'!! office preparatory to the grand
Jury investigation into the conduct of
the office by State Treasurer Hoff aa
ordered by Governor Olcott Monday
following a request for aa investiga
tion by Hoff in order to clear up the
charges of mismanagement of the
funds of the state industrial accident
commission in the purchase of bonds.
The audit was authorized by Gov
ernor Olcott Wednesday afternoon up
on receipt of a, letter from Attorney
tieneral Brown requesting such action
In order that he might be able to pro
ceed intelligently with the grand jury
probe which he has been instructed to
conduct. The expense of the audit will
fee paid out of the special agents fund
in the hands of the governor, it was
slated.
"In undertaking to execute the re
sponsible duty placed upon me it shall
be my end and aim to make the in
quiry entirely fair to the state treasur
r and his assistants, yet exceedingly
searching and most complete," the at
torney general assures the governor In
acknowledging the receipt of the gov
ernor's direction to institute the grand
Jury probe into the affairs of the state
treasurer's office.
"Pursuant to law and particularly
Sec. 2 of chapter 196, Laws of 1915, 1
v.'lll first appear before the grand Jury

in and for Marion county for the pur
pose of making an investigation into
the methods whereby the officials of
the state treasurer's office purchased
the securities with the trust fund held
by that office for investment
"In order to make the investigation
of the greatest value to the state it is
necessary, of course, to obtain the
truth the whole truth and nothing but
the truth, aa far as lies within our
power and in mkking this examination
it is absolutely necessary to gather to
gether the facts and place them bofore
the grand Jury tor tnelr consideration.
"In order to enable me to carry out
your instructions I request that you
cause an audit to be made of the state
treasurer's books either under your
own direction as the chief -. executive
officer of the state or under the super
vision of the secretary of state who Is
the fiscal agent of the state of Ore
gon." Governor Olcott stated this after
noon upon receipt of the attorney gen- j
er&l's letter that the audit would be
conducted immediately as requesteo
and under the direction of his office
as chief executive of the state.

Lands Not Favored
The department of the interior is
not in favor of opening the surplus
lands of the Klamath Indian reserva
tion. In Oregon to settlement at this
time, according to a letter, received
by Governor Olcott today from John
W. Hallowell, assistant to the secre
tary. These lands, which are princi
pally heavily timbered tracts, are not
suitable for farming purposes and
are for that reason, being held us a
tribal asset for the benefit of the In
dians, the letter states. The depart
ment regards it as to the best inter
ests of the Indians to hold the lands
in their present status until the tim
ber on the lands can be sold and re
moved for the benefit of the tribe,
