If Jack John son, former heavyweight champion of the world, lives up to his expressed determination to return to this coun try and surrender himself to the au thorities within the next few weeks his action will terminate a long period of wandering through foreign climes. Johnson who had been convicted of violating the Mann act, slipped out of the United States nearly seven years ago. He had been sentenced at Chicago to serve one year and one dav In prison and to pay a fine of 11,000 but he forfeited his bail and after evading the Federal authorities, landed in Canada in June, 1913. When Johnson left Chicago he started on a Journey which brought him through most of the European and Latin-American countries. Dur ing his period of wandering Johnson initiated Russians in the mysteries of wrestling and boxing, appeared In vaudeville in England music halls, fought .bulls in Spain and Mexico, lost his championship title to Jess ' W'lllard at Havana, Cuba ami took part In over 100 ring fights In ueveral parts of the two hemispheres. When the war broke out In Europe Johnson and his white wife were in Moscow, Russia. Aided by some military friends the pair secured places aboard the last train leaving Moscow for the west. They passed through Poland and Germany and crossed the Helglan frontier finally reaching Paris. Later Johnson went to England and thence to South America. From Buenos Aires he re turned to Spain where he lived for some two years.
