Child welfare lies very near the heart of mothers and Just recently a committee waa appointed from the Mother' Claw of the First M. E. Church to ascertain If these rumors wer true and the committee waa giv en power to formulate a plan where by this condition, if true, might be remedied. The committee consisting; of Mrs. J. B. Littler, Mrs. E. E. Fisher and If in. B. L. Steeves, after consulting; Superintendent Todd of our city schools and Mia Robertson of High land school, learned that the recent milk survey brought about some startling fact. There are 21i pupil hi this school. Out of this number 122 never have ny milk, while about 60 of thi num ber are In actual need. At present a goodly number In the primary department are given malted milk by their teachers, upon their ar rival at school, because of lack of nourishment. The committee was assured if suf ficient fund could be raised a dally soup ration could be in operation within a very few day. A plan ha been evolved whereby only those in need will be given free aoup, those able to pay will be charg ed cost price, strict secrecy being maintained so as to avoid the stamp of poverty being put upon those need ing It most and not encourage depen dency, but all may avail themselves ef the opportunity. At a meeting of the Mother' Oh, on Tuesday of thl week, at the home of Mr. W. C. Young of North High Itreet, the clasa guaranteed to raise the necessary funds for three months February, March and April, This work meets with the heartiest apporv 1 of Superintendent Todd and his corps of teacher in this district. The teachers are to keep a record of the weight and mental development of the pupil to ascertain the real bene fit from the new order of thing and ft report will be given later. It Is hoped this good enterprise will meet with the approval of many of our cltlsen and funds tor the entire time will be freely forthcoming. The committee will gladly receive contribution at any time. Crawford To Talk On Irish Question Lindsay Crawford, the famous ora tor of Belfast, Ireland; .Rev. Maurice Murphy, a Methodist minister from Dublin, and other distinguished Irish-, men now making a tour of the United States, as representatives of the re public of Ireland, will visit Portland next Sunday, February 1. and will speak on the Irish question in the city auditorium In that city Sunday even ing at 8 o'clock. All are invited, Salem friends of Irish freedom should take advantage of thl rare opportunity to hear men who know all about the cause. The warden said that a boat had been found by members of the prison posse on the beach at Ketron Island, near Btcllacoom. This boat had been stolen from McNeil Island, and It Is the conviction of the warden that the prisoner used it to escape, They were among the trusties who milked the prison cow.
