constitutional amendment to prohibit
the secretary of state from succeed
ing to the office of governor In the

chief executive to act. was Introduced
into the senate Friday afternoon by

The amendment will have to be sub
milted to the people for approval If
it is passed by the lopslature.
The resolution Is prompted by the
recent controversy over the rlnht of
b,-n W. Olcott to fill the office of
governor for the full unexpired term
of the late. Governor W(thycombe and
which was decided In fuvor of Olcott
by & supreme court decision handed
down Tuesday.
Hank's resolution provides that "In

governor, or of his death, resigna
tion, absence from the state or In

More than half of these booklets will
be distributed by the State Chamber
of Commerce.
The next meeting of the Marlon
County Community Federation will be
held in Salem February 3.

FiRE DAMAGES MILL
CLOSE TO S1LVERT0N
Silverton, Or., Jan. 16. Fire was
discovered early Wednesday morning
In the Gordon sawmill two miles west
of this city and for a time it looked
as if the entire property would be consumed.
The fire originated In the boiler
room. Men were sleeping in a shanty
near by and at about 3 o clock in the
morning were awakened by the sound
of burning timber. When they went
to the mill the roof of the building
was almost wholly enveloped in flames.
With buckets of water they succeeded
