RANSFER Of YOUTH
GIVING GLANDS Will
BE TRIED ONCE MORE
Pan Quentin, Cal., Nov. II. When
intone Lapara, a handsome Italian
of 29, is hanged, here December 19,
the youth that has put the spring In (
his step and the resonance in his voice
Will be transferred, In a measure from
his dead body to the living body of
one of the old men prisoners.
The means employed will be a sur-
geen'a knife, and the surgeon will
transplant the reproductive intersti- .
tial glands of Lapara to the old mans
tody.
This will be the eleventh operation
of this nature performed at the prison
by Dr. L. li. Stanley, the prison phy
sician, and Dr. O. Stanley Kelker, his
assistant. All of the 10 previous oper
ations have given a measure of youth
to the old men who received the
glands. They have created something
of a sensation in the niedical world.
The old man will be chosen from a
Bcore of volunteers who have faith in
the operation and desire to tap the
fountain of youth.
The doctors beleve that with the
glands will go nothing of the nature
that caused Lapara; to commit his
crime against society. Lapara is sen
tenced for a blackhand murder. He
called an Italian to the door of his
home in San Francisco and shot him
to death with a shotgun. Lapara is
a big man of great vitality, and the
doctors are waiting with considerable
interest to see what measure of this
vitality they can transfer to the boay
of the feeble prisoner to be chosen.
; Much of the- faith in the operation
results from the changed appearance
of the prisoner known as B who
dally is seen- in the prison yard.
U Is 7H years old. Before the op
eration he was old In every respeot.
Ilia face bore' deep wrinkles and his
etep was feeble. He was also old in
spirit. His face bore a hopeless look,
according to the other prisoners, and
his figure was stooped. Now he car
ries himself with accurance, and pro
fesses to have renewed youth. . Many
of the wrinkles have disappeared. He
has Jost his timid attitude of an' old, flands' wh" tn?y could not accept
man, and speaks with a deep and as
sured voice.
Here is published for the first time
a copy of the official record of Dr.
Btanley, who Implanted reproductive
interstitial gianus in it s body:
"B is 73 years old. He was
never married. On pleading guilty to
a crime indicating perversion, he was
sentenced to life Imprisonment, B
was received at San Quentin in Octo
ber, 1917, at which time his weight
Was 126 pounds, aged 70. He had been
a bank clerk and rancher. At thiB
time physical examination showed
him to be bald, pale, hearing impair
ed, most of his teeth missing, poorly
nourished and poorly developed, Oth
erwise lit fair condition. He readily
consented to the transplantation,
which was performed on June 20,
1919. The donor in this case was a
half-breed Indian boy, aged 19, who
was hungod for the murder of a sa-

loon man, whom he and accomplices
wished to rob. After beating out their
victim's brains with a heavy bar, they
also cut hiB throat. Within a half
hour after the donor's death the oper
ation was performed
The following notes were made at
ward visits:
"June 21 Wound slightly sore. No
marked change since operation."
"June 22 Feels better this morn
ing. "June 23 Feels fine. Wound
clean." (Here the record describes
marked changes in the patient's phys-
leal condition.)
"June 24 Notes similar to June 23.
Regular diet."
"June 25 The nurse, in his chart,
notes as follows: U'atlent since oper-
ation has Improved mentally and
physically. Eyes are brighter, and he
is mor0 active mentally and physical-
ly than a man many years his junior.
Appetite excellent. Nerves are
steadier. Anxious to be about doing
something of Interest. Before opera
tion was naturally reticent, but is now
positively emphatic. Summing up the
whole demeanor of the patient six
days after operation, he has more pep
and Jazz and increased mental energy
than most men many years his junior.
At ward rounds patient remarked that
he felt like a fighting cock. Said he
wanted to get out and hit someone.' "
The patient, according to the rec
ord, was able to be up on July 10.
Incorporated in the record Is a let
tor from E in which he states
he is quite sure he has received a new
lease on life and that it will be of per
manent value.
E today told the United Press,
more than four months following the
operation, that he feels like a new
man. There was nothing retiring about
him. . .
"I hope to be paroled from pris
on," he said,, "and if I am, I shall
marry, if I find the right woman."
San Francisco, Cal., No. 11 (United
Press.) The nice question whether a
widow of a criminal hanged, at San
Quentin can demand that his intersti
tial glands be delivered to her for sale,
may be decided in the courts.
Attorney Nate Coghlan, who defend
ed Anthony Lapara, believes the widow
has the right to. demand the glands.
Lapara Is to be hanged December 19.
The prison doctors announced they had
received an offer of $10,000 for the
because of the prison rules.
"Courts have ropeatodly held that
anything of value belongs to the
widow," said Gohlan. "Medical re
search seems to have placed great
value on those glands. Such a case
would establish a precedent. The case
would be most unusual."
Goghlan believes ' an injunction
might be obtained preventing agents
of the state' using the reproductive in
terstitial glands and ordering the phy
sicians to "keep them on ice" until
the legal question could be decided.
