Grand- parents are Vicki McClaran and Scott McClaran and Nancy and Dick Stangel. Weather Forecast OUT OF THE PAST Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins 100 YEARS AGO July 6, 1922 While bathing in the new swimming pool at Wallowa, Ike Skelton was drowned. The pool formerly was the gravel pit made by the rock crusher when surfac- ing the road last summer. It was planned at fi rst to level the bottom of the pit before the water was turned into it, but there were doubts the pit would hold water, so the bottom was left uneven. Lost in the upper Chesnimnus for nearly a day, during which he trav- eled about 15 miles straight away from home, eight- year old Bobby Kellogg was found safe yesterday morning. A stream of cars com- ing and going on the valley highway was the evidence that Tuesday was the Fourth of July. The towns were nearly deserted. Tom Dixon was up nearly all night at his service station, and was called out of bed after he had retired, to serve cars short of gas and oil. 75 YEARS AGO July 10, 1947 The Ford car given away by the Enterprise chamber of commerce in their cam- paign to provide an athletic fi eld for the high school has been won by Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Crader of Joseph. 4200 tickets were sold on the car. About 5,000 people paid almost $10,000 into the cof- fers of the county fair board during the three-day county fair celebration. A large crowd was on hand to wit- ness the parade in the morn- ing in which 370 head of saddle horses appeared. Sam Loftus sustained a broken vertebra in his neck at the fair when he was thrown from a bucking horse which stepped on his neck. A collection was taken from the audience at the fair and over $500 was received. 50 YEARS AGO July 6, 1972 The Enterprise Giants were the undisputed Wallowa Valley League Babe Ruth champions this year with a 10-0 record. Members of the team are: Jeff Rynearson, Doug Homan, Gary Potratz, Randy McFetridge, Gene Frazier, Scott McClaran, Doug Simmons, Duff Pace, Bill Fisher, Jeff Lathrop, Mike Potratz, Fred Carlson, and coach Dave Larson and Jim Frazier, manager. A smoke bomb caused quite a stir in Troy when it was tossed in a patch of dry grass. The fi re was put out with a bucket brigade from the Grande Ronde and water hoses manned by the Volun- teer Fire Department. 25 YEARS AGO July 3, 1997 Best of Show honors at the Wallowa Valley Festi- val of Arts went to Austin Barton’s bronze, “The Sen- tinel”; the People’s Choice ribbon went to a whimsi- cal bent willow sculpture by Greg Krolick. A total of 15 FFA mem- bers competed in the recent Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, bringing home many ribbons. Reserve Grand Champion All-Around Showman of the show, as well as grand champion FFA swine showman, was Don- nie Rynearson. Art was the youngest of three children born to Everett Layton and Geneva Rue (Treat) Cannon of Flora, Oregon. They went home to the Lost Prairie ranch, where his great-grandmother homesteaded in 1884 and where he spent nearly his entire life. He and his siblings attended Lost Prai- rie School, except fourth through sixth grade, when his parents purchased a home in Enterprise and his mother and the children lived in town during the week, return- ing home for the weekends and summer vacations. All three children graduated from Enterprise High School. Art was on active duty with the U.S. Navy for a cou- ple of years, beginning in 1955, and spent the remainder of the six years in the reserves. On June 7, 1958, he and Nancy Sue Graham were married at the Nazarene Parsonage in Enterprise. Following their marriage, they bought the home place from his parents, where they lived until they bought adjoining property and moved a half mile down the road. They were blessed with four children, Elaine, who passed away at 7 months, fol- lowed by Brenda, Lorelei and Charles. Art was happy to be a rancher and loved raising cat- tle, hogs, chickens, grain and hay and driving the trac- tors, especially the old D-2. Art was a hands-on dad, always teaching his kids about farming, riding horses and driving the machinery, hunting and fishing. He was an amazing grandpa and great-grandpa. When his old- est granddaughter was a young girl, after hearing the song “Daddy’s Hands” she remarked that every time she heard that song it made her think of Grandpa and Uncle Chuck. Art taught all of the kids and most of the grands and several of the greats to drive the tractors, vehicles and ATVs - and, of course, to ride horses. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters, Brenda Daggett and Lorelei Burch; son, Chuck; grandchildren, Tiffany Tennis (Coty), Clinton Werst Daggett (Alyssa), Juanita Daggett, Wade Schnetzky (Alicia), Christopher Burch (Tanya), Craig Burch, Will Cannon (Amanda) and Stanley Cannon, as well as Angie Mullenax and her daughter, Avayah; great-grandchildren, Dakota DeLyria, Pearce, Carter, Mason and Beth-Anne Schnetzky, Bren Gaines and Cyrus Burch, Casey Gaines, MacKenzie Cannon and Lennon Werst-Dag- gett; nephew, David Ross, who was Art and Nancy’s summertime son for many of his childhood years; sis- ters-in-law, Paula Ross and Cora Cannon; brother-in- law, Paul Graham (Cathie); nieces, Cecelia Anthony Liskey and Berle Ross; and nephews, Stephen and Scott Cannon and Dan Ross. In addition to his parents, Art was preceded in death by his daughter, Elaine; niece, Verla Anthony; broth- er, Gordon; sister, Gretchen Cannon Anthony and her husband, Donald Anthony; nephew, Sam Ross; and great-grandchildren, twins Kimber and Sarah DeLyria and Rowen and Baby Burch. DAY BY DAY CANCER SUP- PORT GROUP: 2-3:30 p.m. Scott Bohnenkamp June 16, 1952 - June 18, 2022 Scott George Bohnenkamp was the oldest of two sons born to George and Betty (Rogers) Bohnenkamp on June 16, 1952, in La Grande. Scott spent his life in the woods and took great pride in being an ac- complished logger, machine opera- tor, mechanic, and auto body man. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman who spent many years logging with his son Mike. The two stayed in regular contact throughout the years and Mike went to every effort to protect and help his father until the very end. Scott’s biggest love was perhaps his many dogs through the years which were close to his thoughts and heart in the confusion of the last few months of his life. Scott leaves behind his mother, son Mike, six grand- children, two great-grandchildren, and his beloved dog, Dummy. Scott did not want a funeral, so instead his son will return him to the woods in a private memorial and those who wish to honor his life can raise a glass in his name. The family would like to express our gratitude to Brandon Tanzey for his selfless efforts throughout this ordeal.
