I love crime films and TV shows, especially the
ones that are based on true stories.
Recently HBO Max released a miniseries created
by David Simon, who is infamously known for “The
Wire,” a crime drama that takes place in Baltimore
as we go through the many perspectives of the lives
of law enforcement officers, judges, lawyers, drug
dealers and drug users.
Simon returns to his Baltimore roots with this
riveting and chilling tale about police brutality and
the power of abuse. “We Own This City” is based on
Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton’s book of the
same name and tells the true story of the rise and fall
of the Baltimore Police Gun Trace Task Force.

ON THIS WEEK’S ISSUE
The story follows Sgt. Wayne Jenkins and his
crew of eight who were all convicted on corruption
charges.
Simon immerses the viewer on a visual land-
scape, told nonlinearly beginning from 2017-19. And
between those years Baltimore deals with the loss of
Fredd Gray, a 25-year old Black man killed by Balti-
more police.
We weave through the perplexities of how the FBI,
U.S. Department of Justice and local officials deal
with the broken system that allows the Baltimore Po-
lice Gun Trace Task Force to operate with few if any
constraints. And how corruption, abuse and mass
arrest began to escalate by those who were sworn to
protect their citizens.
It’s a terrific watch, and I highly recommend this
six-part series on HBO Max.

Joey King stars in “The Princess.”

Joey King channels John McClane in “The
Princess,” a fast-paced fairy tale, tailor-made
for teens who can handle a little screen
violence. King, best known for “The Kiss-
ing Booth” flicks, plays a spunky version of
Rapunzel, descending from her prison in a
medieval tower through a flurry of swordplay,
fist fights and corny quips. This is no dam-
sel in distress. Some of the scenes get a bit
repetitive — how many different ways can you
stab a smug guard? — and Dominic Cooper’s
villain isn’t very threatening. But the movie’s
core audience won’t care. Expect 14-year-old
viewers to stop asking for a pony and start
begging for karate lessons instead. Debuted
July 1 on Hulu.
Although it drew inspiration from the novel
that became movies of the same title with
Elizabeth Taylor (1950) and Steve Martin
(1991), “Father of the Bride” is a whole new
story in a whole new milieu. Andy Garcia,
whose voice conveys heartbreak better than
anyone’s, plays the title character, a wealthy
Cuban American estranged from his wife
(Gloria Estefan) and trying to keep a han-
dle on his daughter’s out-of-control mar-
riage into an even richer Mexican American
family. The luxe Miami locations are spec-
tacular, the cast is absurdly gorgeous and a
few surprises helped make it the streaming
service’s most popular movie. Watch it on
HBO Max.
Rowan Atkinson, the mastermind behind
“Black Adder” and “Mr. Bean,” plays a house
sitter in “Man vs. Bee” whose battle with a
stubborn bee triggers one mini disaster after
another. It’s basically a live action version of
Wile E. Coyote vs. the Road Runner with each
episode running about as long as a typical
