A2 RECORDS Wallowa County Chieftain Wednesday, June 8, 2022 County high school becomes Enterprise hospital OUT OF THE PAST Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins 100 YEARS AGO June 8, 1922 The old county high school is now the Enterprise hospi- tal. Two acres of the site is involved in litigation, the Cir- cuit Court having just decided that it has reverted to Frank A. Reavis, the original owner. Muskrats are believed to have caused a break in the dyke holding the upper hatch- ery pond, letting out most of the water and a few of the salmon. William B. Ault, son of Dr. and Mrs. C. A. Ault of Enter- prise, has been given high- est honors in his class which received diplomas last week at the United States naval academy. He was the head in scholarship, general effi - ciency and good conduct, as Barbara Ann Sorensen February 27, 1934 – May 13, 2022 Barbara, of Sun City West, AZ, passed away on May 13, 2022, at the age of 88. Elvin “Buz” Rex Cates December 28,1939 - April 22, 2022 After a brief battle with can- cer, Elvin “Buz” Cates, 82, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at Wallowa Me- morial Hospital on April 22, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judy; three children, Randy (Sandy) of Lewiston, Idaho, Carrie Gomez of Imnaha, and Will (Mag- gie) of Springfield, Oregon; and 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Buz was born in San Angelo, Texas, and spent his childhood years in San Angelo and Corpus Christi, Tex- as, before moving to Southern California when he was 13. He graduated from Covina High School and took a few college courses before taking a carpentry job. He took early retirement from a pulp and paper mill in Halsey, Oregon, after working more than 30 years in the industry. Buz’s hobbies included bow hunting (he bagged his last deer with his bow at age 81). He was a fisher- man, both saltwater and fresh. His home on the Imnaha boasts one of the best fishing holes on the river and Buz spent many happy hours during the season trying his luck. He also enjoyed building and refurbishing musical instruments - particularly the banjo, which was the in- strument he played with the band he helped form many years ago, now known as Last Call. Buz also loved watching collegiate sports and was an avid University of Oregon Duck fan. Buz was loved and well respected in the community. His granddaughter nicknamed him “the Godfather of Imnaha.” He will be missed by all. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, June 20, starting at 3 p.m. at the home of Cody and Brooke (proprietors of the Imnaha Store and Tavern) at 78995 Upper Imnaha Road (directly behind the store). well as athletics. 75 YEARS AGO June 12, 1947 The Wallowa County Farm Bureau has awarded two scholarships to 4-H sum- mer school. Her daughters (Andrea and Whitney Locke), sister, and close friends were there with her by her side when she took her last breath. Andrea and Whitney are aware there was no obituary placed in the Chieftain or any other news source after she passed, and this led some people to believe she was still alive. Mrs. Nancy (Nina) Lee Locke Doelle was born July 26, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario, and was raised in London, Ontario, Canada, where she met William K. Locke. They were married and in 1984 Willy and Nan- cy moved to Wallowa County to start a family but di- vorced seven years later. During her 20 years of living in Wallowa County, she accomplished a lot. She opened the Handy Wag- on in 1985 for skiers at Ferguson Ridge and the first tea room in downtown Joseph (which is now Bee Crow Bee). She was involved with most of the lip sync, kara- oke, art and drama groups. She sold sculptures at Valley Bronze and worked as a waitress at Cactus Jacks, Cloud 9 Bakery and the Elks Club, while also holding down a second job as a certified nursing assistant at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. Working two jobs as a single mom in “the middle of nowhere, the center of the universe” she managed to go to school as well! Our mom worked tirelessly to provide for her family. She had big dreams of travel, wealth and lots of sparkles to shine the way to her future as a registered nurse. After graduating from nursing school at the age of 50, she repaid her debt to Wallowa Memorial Hospital and then moved out of Wallowa County to follow her dreams as a travel nurse. She worked in Boise, Idaho, to gain experience, then was able to pick up travel jobs in Hawaii, California and Oregon. It has been five years since she left us, but she is always on our minds and in our hearts. Though she claimed life was hard in Wallowa County she continued to adore the sight of the gorgeous mountains and the smell of fresh-cut hay. She influenced everyone she met in some way or another. Our mom had a light within her that could never be put to rest. Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Two dozen Nez Perce rid- ers in full regalia will ride along the west rim of Joseph Creek canyon on Appaloosa horses next week in celebra- tion of the return of their peo- ple to Wallowa County after a 120-year hiatus. The Ponderosa Motel in Enterprise was extensively damaged by a fi re on May 29. Enterprise Fire Dept. fought the fi re which started in a bathroom heat lamp fi xture and burned throughout the attic area. On May 8 the Bank of Wallowa County, which was formed in 1955, underwent a name change and is now Community Bank. Joseph was a great success. Winners of the chicken catch- ing contest held over the weekend were Karen Tippett, Brian Schmidt, Jodie Wil- son, Briand Lombardi, Ed Goebel, Ted McGinnis and Tim Kiesecker. The Vista Theater in Enter- prise was burglarized and about $80 in change was sto- len. There was about $800 in the offi ce also, but it was not stolen. Ardis was married to Harold Klages, who preceded her in death. Harold married Ardis Dec. 23, 1955. The newlyweds made their home on the family ranch in Joseph where they lived all their lives. Harold and Ardis had four chil- dren: sons, Richard “Rick” Klages and Alan Klages, and daughters, Andrea (Klages) Shannon and Maika Klages. Ardis was an avid supporter of many activities in the community. They included Grace Lutheran Church, teaching second and third grade at Enterprise, Wallowa County 4-H, Eagle Cap ski run, lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary, ballot counting for elections, Wallowa County Cow Bells, board member of Joseph Library, all Wallowa County schools and Joseph PTA. Ardis had a passion for cooking and sewing. She was well known for her outstanding desserts. Ardis made sure that the hired hands on the farm had breakfast and lunch (which always included dessert) and supper during harvest time. Her love for sewing included many costumes for school plays, Halloween, church plays, weddings, prom dresses and cheerleading uniforms. Ardis also loved quilting blankets as gifts for weddings, graduations and baby showers. She loved spending time with the family hunting, fishing, camping, huckleberry picking, skiing and hik- ing in the Eagle Cap. Ardis dearly loved the Lord and her church family. She is survived by her sons, Rick Klages and wife, LeVaughn, of La Grande, and Alan Klages and wife, Daarla, of Joseph; daughters, Andrea (Klages) Shannon of Joseph and Maika Klages of Reno, Nevada; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister, Alice LaRose Ledford of Walla Walla, Washington; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and countless friends.
