Kathy was born and raised in
Portland, the daughter of Milo and
Irene Cook. She had four brothers
who loved her dearly: Milo Jr.,
Steven, Edward and Howard.
Kathy moved to Wallowa
County in 1978 and liked what
she found here: fresh air, beauti-
ful countryside and good people.
She married Jim Fanning the sum-
mer of 1979. Kathy and Jim have 2 fine, loving sons
and a wonderful daughter-in-law: Ian Kenneth (Katie)
and Bradley Tristan. She cherished her grandchildren:
Reese, Tristan and Noe. She was devastated when she
realized she would not see them grow to be fine adults.
ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) took Kathy’s life prema-
turely, denying her family and friends her uplifting
vitality and affection.
Kathy found a lot of success during her life, primar-
ily because she had a very positive, can-do approach to
everything she did. All who experienced her winning
smile, generous hugs, her cheerful spirit and trusting
nature were changed forever. She is missed dearly.
There will be a celebration of Kathy’s life at the
Imnaha Store and Tavern on May 29th at 3:00 PM.

Donald Leroy Hough
December 5, 1932 - March 23, 2022
Donald was born to Hugh and Lucille
Giles Hough in Hugo, Colorado. The fam-
ily moved to the Ashgrove area of Denver
when Don was 4. Don started getting farm
experience early on, milking
cows and driving tractor for
area farmers at the age of 8.
Always working while at-
tending school, he graduated
from South High School in
1950.
After high school, he was
drafted into the United States
Army, where he served as a
Staff Sergeant during the
Korean War. After the Army,
Don enrolled at (then) Col-
orado A&M University and
majored in animal husband-
ry. While there, he pledged Farmhouse
fraternity, serving as president. He was
awarded a bachelor of science degree
from Colorado State University in 1959.
Following his graduation from college, he
joined his father in a farming business in
Douglas County, Colorado. They worked
together to raise dry land wheat and cattle.
Don married Lois Rosser in 1959 in
Denver, Colorado. She joined him on the
farm in Douglas County. Their daughter,
Danna, was born in 1960. After Danna was
born, Don returned to school for a mas-
ter’s degree in science education. During
this time, Don, Lois, and Danna moved to
Elizabeth, Colorado, where they purchased
more farmland for the Hough family ranch.
He was also employed by Castle Rock
High School to teach Biology. Eventually,
Don and Lois decided to search for their
own ranch - a place with abundant water
and grass that would be perfect for raising
cattle.
In 1971, he purchased the Double Key
Ranch in Joseph, Oregon. For nearly 50
years, Don operated the 5,000 acre ranch
- the largest, contiguous ranch in Wallowa
County. Ranching was always his passion,
and he concentrated on improving his An-
gus cattle herd and providing them with
the best environment. His knowledge of
biology and genetics helped him to be a
forward thinker and leader in the selective
breeding of cattle. He was selected by Wal-
lowa County Stockgrowers Association as
“Cattleman of the Year” and “Grassman
of the Year.” In his “spare time,” Don was
an active member in the Oregon Cattle-
men’s Association, the Liberty Grange and
served as President of the
Associated Ditch Company.
Don and Lois both be-
lieved in agriculture ed-
ucation, and were strong
supporters of the Wallowa
County 4-H and FFA pro-
grams. Don was a respected
livestock judge and show-
man, and they both loved
visiting the County Fair to
observe the youth projects.
Don supported the annual
stock sale by buying several
animals over the years.
Don was preceded in death by his
parents, Hugh and Lucille, his daughter
Danna, and his wife of 60 years, Lois
Hough.
He is survived by his siblings: Hugh
Vernon Hough of Charleston, SC;
Nadine Lucille Hough Murray (John)
of Seattle, WA; Kenneth Charles Hough
(Beth) of Enterprise, OR. Surviving nieces
and nephews include: Sheridan Hough
(Christian) of Charleston, SC; Kendall
Hayes (Jerry) of Enterprise, OR; Kirsten
Pennell of Virginia Beach, VA; Jason
Hough (Heidi) of St. John, WA; and John
Andrew Murray (Joanna) of Seattle, WA.
Surviving grand nieces and nephews
include Connor Pennell of Virginia Beach,
VA.; Marley Hayes of Enterprise, OR;
Kaitlyn and Tyler Hough of Saint John,
WA; and Isabella and Tasmyn Murray of
Seattle, WA.
Most important to Don were his
family, his Christian faith, and his passion
for cattle ranching. He often said, “I got
to do what I wanted to do in my life.”
Don will be laid to rest at Prairie Creek
Cemetery, next to his wife Lois. Graveside
services will be held Thursday April 7, at
2 p.m. Bollman Funeral Home entrusted
with arrangements.
Remembrances may be made to First
Baptist Church, 1420 W. North Street,
