RECORDS Wallowa County Chieftain A2 Enterprise paving covers slop, mud OUT OF THE PAST 75 YEARS AGO Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins Memories of pioneer days in Wallowa county were stirred this week when work- men began tearing down the old Alder church which was erected on the Slope in the 1870s. It is believed that the Alder church was the old- est church in the county. Alder was a community before the town of Enterprise was founded and the Alder church was the community church for many years. Mrs. Irene Wiggins and son Bob arrived to start pre- paring the Wallowa lake lodge for the 1947 season. Several new cabins are to be built on the lodge grounds this year. April 3, 1947 100 YEARS AGO March 30, 1922 In Enterprise, the improvement of pavement has been so revolutionary that it is hard to realize that the town had to put up with slop, mud and dust in other years. It is the greatest for- ward step ever taken by the town. The Chico stage now consists of a packhorse led behind Tom Jacobs’ sad- dle horse. Part of the mail is carried in large saddle bags on the saddle horse and the remainder, with such freight as can be handled, goes on the pack animal. Due to snow and mud, the Chico road is impassible for either wheels or sled. J. S. Kay has purchased the B. E. Duncan store at Lostine. The stock consists of groceries and dry goods, and has enjoyed a good patronage. 50 YEARS AGO March 30, 1972 Tryouts for the Chief Joseph Days court were held at the show barn at the county fairgrounds last week. The three young women cho- sen to the court are Joni Birk- maier, EHS; Sherrie Storie, JHS; and Christi Kiser, JHS. There have been sev- eral reports lately of “strange happenings” in the moun- tains to the south of Wallowa Valley. A number of people in the past two weeks have seen some unexplained lights doing some rather odd things. 25 YEARS AGO March 27, 1997 Idaho Northern & Pacifi c railroad has received pre- liminary approval to aban- don 60 miles of railroad line from Elgin to Joseph. Wal- lowa Forest Products has hired a Chicago law fi rm in an attempt to stop the aban- donment which would elim- inate rail service in Wallowa County. Joseph High School stu- dent Heath Curtiss, 17, was elected president of the 5,000-member Oregon FFA organization. Aneliese Johnson, Enter- prise High School, has been named Oregon Class 2A Girls Basketball Player of the Year for 1996-97. Judith Lee Ross William Lee Ross October 26, 1943 - February 12, 2022 July 9, 1942 - February 20,2022 Judith ‘Judy’ Lee Ross, 78, of Joseph, Oregon, beloved wife, mother and grand- mother, passed away on Feb. 12, 2022, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise, Oregon. William ‘Bill’ Lee Ross, 79 of Joseph, Oregon, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Feb. 20, 2022, in Joseph, Oregon. Judy was born Oct. 26, 1943, to Mary (Daisley) Russell and Verne Russell in Seattle, Washington. Bill was born July 9, 1942, to Roberta ‘Bertie’ (Rooke) Ross and William ‘Doug’ Ross in Lewiston, Idaho. Judy and Bill met during their final years of high school in Joseph, and were married on July 7, 1962, in Enterprise at St. Katherine’s Catholic Church. During the early years of their marriage, Bill was serving his country in the United States Air Force, stationed in Bangor, Maine. They would live on the East coast for 4 years where their oldest daughter was born. At the completion of Bill’s service, the small family loaded up a 1958 Chevy and drove cross-country to their new home in Eastern Oregon, where their family expanded to include a second daughter, followed by a son. They would settle in Island City. In 1975 the family left Island City and headed North to Alaska. Judy and Bill lived in Yakutat, Alaska, until they retired in 1998. Judy worked as a bank teller for Key Bank for over 15 years. Her friendly and kind demeanor made her a favorite teller at the Yakutat branch. Bill worked for the State of Alaska, Department of Transpor- tation for 23 years as a heavy equipment operator and airport manager. It was al- ways appreciated when the Alaska Airlines jets were able to land following a heavy snow. After retirement, they left Yakutat, re- turning to Eastern Oregon. They resettled in Joseph and reconnected with lifelong friends where they enjoyed an active so- cial life. Judy’s interests included arts and crafts, volunteering at the Wallowa County Museum, working in her flower beds each spring and summer, and the many get-to- gethers with dear friends. Bill enjoyed working in his yard, rounding up cattle with his friends, ‘boarding’ the neighbor’s hors- es each summer and keeping their proper- ty weed, snow and squirrel free. Judy and Bill were very proud of their children and grandchildren and liked to share photos and tell stories whenever they got the chance. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Verne and Mary Russell, and her grandparents Albert and Mildred Daisley, and Leeman and Theresa Russell. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Ross, his parents, William and Roberta Ross and his grandpar- ents Bessie and James Rooke, and William and Alice Ross. Judy and Bill are survived by daugh- ters Teri (Mark) Hoover of Juneau, AK, and Tina (Ed) Parrott of Pasco, WA, son Timothy (Kelly) Ross of Kent, WA/Ya- kutat, AK, and bonus son-in-law Greg Dierick of Yakutat, AK. Grandchildren Kyle Dierick of Yakutat, AK, Kristen Dierick of Wenatchee, WA, and step grandchildren Kallen Hoover, Kol- by Hoover, Victoria Walls and Brittany Parrott; and four step great-grandchildren. Judy’s brother James (Theresa) Russell of Joseph, OR, and Aunt Rita Hall of Scotts- dale, AZ; Bill’s brother Robert Ross of Big Lake, AK, half-sibling James Ross of Ya- kutat, AK, and step siblings Molly Gloyer, Kathleen Hurst, Tim Doughtery and Danny Doughtery; as well as many cousins, niec- es, nephews and many very dear friends; and great grand dogs Allie, Fisher, Tika, Nahla Rae, Montcie and Mila. Judy and Bill were loved by all who knew them, and they will be missed very much. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at the Joseph Cemetery. A small gathering at the Stubborn Mule will follow. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Friends of the Wallowa County Museum and/or the Wal- lowa County Humane Society.
