He was born in Frederic, Wis- consin, to Walter and Doris (Mar- cotte) Anderson. They lived in the small town of Centuria. Life changed for the family in 1950 when his mother died of can- cer. Gary was only 6 and his two brothers were 2 and 7, leaving his dad with a dilemma. Gary spent quite some time living with an aunt and uncle and cousin until his dad could find other arrangements. After a few years, the family moved to Oregon, hoping it would help his severe asthma. They settled in Newberg and Gary attended Newberg Public Schools. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1962 and went to study Fish Biology at Oregon State University. He graduated from Oregon State in 1966 with a de- gree in Fisheries Science. He was a career employee of the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife starting out with the then-called Oregon State Game Commission. While going to college he worked summers for the Game Commission in Corvallis, Astoria and The Dalles. After graduation, he was assigned to Enterprise in January 1967. It was his first trip to Wallowa County. He moved everything he had in the back of a new 1967 Ford Mustang, and of course, car payments. Within a year, he became the Assistant District Fish Biologist for the Wallowa District. He came to love Wallowa County and remained in that job for 18 years. In 1972, he had a minor accident and went to the old Wallowa Memorial Hospital. On that day, Kay Sim- mons, from Umatilla Co. was the Emergency Room Nurse. Six months later they were married in a secret wedding the day after Christmas and then left town for a few days. Twin daughters, Nicole and Michelle, were born in 1977. Nicole died shortly after due to lung complica- tions. In 1979, another daughter, Kristin, was born. In 1985, he reluctantly left Wallowa Co. after being promoted to District Biologist in the Lake District and resided in Lakeview. He and Kay remained there until he retired. In 2000, they returned to Enterprise to their new home on Alder Slope. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood cutting and trapshooting. He was a life member of the Wallowa Rod & Gun Club and competed for several years in ATA sanctioned events throughout the Northwest. He is survived by wife of 49 years, Kay, and daugh- ters Michelle and Kristin (Aaron), two brothers, Ray- mond and Dale (Chris), and four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and daughter, Nicole. At his request there will be no services.
