He was caught and pleaded guilty, and was given a sentence of ten days in the county jail and a fi ne of $250. A budget for 1922 was prepared by the county court last week. The estimated amount of money needed to run the county next year is $201,687. A large crowd enjoyed the Armistice day program at Joseph. The parade, a long string of business and school fl oats, was one of the fea- tures of the day. The fi rst a fi replace at the Frank- lin-Thompson pond south of town in order to make it more convenient and comfortable for skaters this winter. 50 YEARS AGO Nov. 18, 1971 Elodie Ann Banks Sept. 19, 1947 - October 23, 2021 Elodie Ann Banks was born Sept. 19, 1947, in Prairie City, to parents Dexter and Mary Yokom. Elodie passed away at Sacred Heart Providence Hos- pital in Spokane, Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021. Elodie attended school in Canyon City, Mt. Vernon, and for many years in Enterprise, where she graduated high school in 1965. She then attended Phagan’s School of Beauty and continued her career as a hairdresser in Portland and Pendleton where she retired in 2017. She enjoyed gardening, camping trips to Boardman with family and friends, riding her bike to the park, and in her spare time taking care of her grand-dogs, and keeping a beautiful home. Elodie married Jim Banks in Pendleton in 1973. She is survived by her husband, Jim of 48 years; sister, Mary Ann Warnock; brother, Dexter (Sonny) Yokum and wife, Jan Yokom; daught er, Shauna Ryan; son, Ron Banks; step- sons, Kelly Banks and Patrick Ryan; grandchildren, Vance, Keenan, Meghan, Lexus, Trista, Kierssa, Cody, Brooke and Madi; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dexter and Mary Yokom; and stepson, Scott Banks. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The barbecue was served army style. 75 YEARS AGO Nov. 21, 1946 A shop and barn belong- ing to H. C. Chenoweth, at the junction of the Enter- prise-La Grande highway and the golf course road, burned down. The telephone operator had phoned the fi re- men stating that the fi re was at the county shops. They went fi rst to the new shops and then to the old county shops, but found no fi re. By the time they arrived at the fi re the fl ames were out of control and nothing could be saved. Residents of the Troy area are determined to get electric power and daily mail ser- vice. Approximately 60 sig- natures for power service were obtained at a recent meeting in Troy. The Lions club plans to put in a lighting system and Wallowa High School’s Thespians Drama Club will present “The Red House Mystery” next week. Bryan Sines and Darlene Cowan have the lead roles. EHS’ lettermen’s club held a potluck dinner and two awards were presented to two of the top players. Roger Jensen was selected by his team mates as the most valuable player; Mike Reynolds received the desire award from the coaching staff . Ten girls from the three county high schools will compete in the fi nals of the Wallowa County Junior Miss pageant, sponsored by the Wallowa County Jay- cees. Girls competing are: Diane Freels, Kim Scott, Chris Johnson, Judy Knight, Judy Zacharias, Debbie Tal- bott, Judi Neil, Gail Aschen- Nov. 14, 1996 Ron Jett was elected Wal- lowa County Sheriff by a narrow 47-vote margin over Tim Johnson in the county’s closest election race. Wal- lowa County had the highest voter turnout in Oregon with 81.88% of registered voters casting their ballots. The Enterprise Sav- ages, who won the Oregon Class 2A volleyball cham- pionship, were dominant as well in recent All-Wapiti League selections. Shan- non Ables, Chelsie Nash and Diane McFetridge were picked for the All-League fi rst team. Aneliese Johnson made the second team and Honorable Mentions went to Amy Adams and Gretchen Forster. Golden shovels were used to turn dirt Tuesday at the ceremonial ground break- ing of a 53-unit Best West- ern Motel west of Enterprise. The units are to be open to the public in May. Arlene Loraine (Moni) Stanley January 26, 1935 - August 30, 2021 Arlene Loraine (Moni) Stanley was born Jan- uary 26, 1935 in Oakdale, CA. She was the beloved daughter of Renato and Elizabeth (Kinney) Moni, and stepmother Irene Moni; sister of Donald Moni (Betty), Sandra Sanders (Archie), and Reba Simpson (Steve); wife of James Stanley; Mother to Greg Stan- ley (Alice), and Gail Stanley; and dear family mem- ber, friend, and neighbor to many. Arlene grew up in San Jose, CA. She met and married Jim in Honolulu, HI in 1954. They moved to his hometown of Joseph, OR where she worked at Wallowa Lake Lodge while he served in the Navy during the Korean war. They lived in Corvallis, OR where Jim attended Oregon State University before the family moved to Sacramento, CA in 1962, and then returned to Oregon in 1974. Arlene loved to read and she worked as a retail associate at Consumnes River College in Sacramento, as well as at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. She was involved with her churches in Beaverton, Palm Springs, and Sacra- mento in volunteer roles, and as well as a member of numerous groups includ- ing Prime Timers, and Bible Study. She and Jim were avid RVers and travelled throughout the US for many years spending summers in Wallowa County, OR and winters in both Yuma, AZ and Palm Springs, CA meeting with friends and family along the way. She also enjoyed playing in pinochle card groups. Arlene passed away on August 30, 2021 at her home in Beaverton, Ore- gon, surrounded by family, following a courageous and graceful battle with cancer. She was laid to rest on September 13, 2021 at Prairie Creek Cemetery in Joseph, Oregon. Her sweet and loving presence will be missed by us all. Michael Jay Miller August 20, 1947 - October 27, 2021 Michael “Mike” Jay Miller, was born August 20, 1947, in Enterprise, Oregon, to Robert Jay “Tex” Mill- er and Bonnie Jean (McCubbin) Miller. He passed away on October 27, 2021, in Baker City, Oregon, due to complications with Alzheimer’s Disease. Graveside funeral services, officiated by Lee Bollman, will be held at 3:00 p.m., at the Enterprise Cemetery. A Cele- bration of Life will follow at the Enterprise VFW Hall. Mike was the oldest of three children, siblings Donald Miller (passed away on the same day as Mike) and Janelle Miller. Mike was raised and lived all of his life in Enterprise, Oregon. He graduated from Enterprise High School in 1966. On June 2, 1967, he married Lynn Grote. The couple had two daughters, Wendy Roberts and Toni Bennett. The union later ended in divorce, but they remained close friends. Mike was known for his skills in operating heavy equipment. He worked for RD Mac, Inc., DMcD, and the Wallowa County Road Department, where he retired in 2012. He proudly kept the town of Imnaha, Oregon, and the river woods clear of snow every winter, making lifelong friends in the process. Over the years, Mike served as a member of the Enterprise Volunteer Fire Department; Elks Lodge #1829; and he coached Little League Softball for his daughter, Wendy’s team. Mike was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends snowmobiling, riding ATVs, whitewater river rafting, hunting, fishing, drinking beer and watching his grandchildren play sports. He will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor and gift for making others smile. Mike is survived by his daughter’s, Wendy Roberts of La Grande, Oregon, and Toni Bennett of Baker City, Oregon; Sister, Janelle Miller, of Pendleton, Or- egon; First Cousin, Rick Miller (Mindy) of Pendleton. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.lovelandfuneralchapel.com. 25 YEARS AGO CORRECTION July 2nd, 1954 - October 30, 2021 Cindy Lee Shipp (Fine), known to many as Prairie Flower, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. She passed away on October 30th, 2021. Cindy was born to Sonny and Darlene Fine in Dayton, Washington on July 2nd, 1954, and raised in Wallowa county by her loving Grandparents, Mildred and Clint Johnson near Elk Mountain. An accomplished cook, Cindy co-founded the first vegetarian restaurant in Corvallis, Oregon. Cindy was caring and compassionate. She earned her nursing degree from Blue Mountain Community College and worked as a registered nurse for many years. Cindy loved dogs as well as people and was especially fond of her Boston Ter- riers. She was very good at fishing as well, and caught and fried up many Rainbow Trout in her day. Cindy also enjoyed travel and adventure. She traveled throughout the US and Mexico as well as Japan and Europe. Cindy was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 20 years, Norman Shipp. She is survived by her four children Heather Bowers (John), Sol War- nock (Kelly), Grace Fitzgerald (Jake), Bill Warnock (Allie), 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews. Her family will dearly miss their in-person visits and video chats with her. She had a way of making each person she talked to feel like the most treasured, important, and talented person on earth. Cindy was quick to make friends and held them close to her heart. We, her surviving family, want to thank all her friends who have enriched her life beyond measure and comforted us with love and support in our time of mourning. We are so grateful that she made it back to her home in Wallowa County where she was able to spend her final days reconnecting with her dear friends and family. This allowed her to leave this world with peace, love, and happiness. Her heart of gold and an unparalleled sense of humor will be greatly missed by so many. To honor Cindy, a public viewing will be held at Bollman Funeral Home in Enterprise on November 20th, 10:00 am -12:00 pm, followed by a fami- ly graveside service at Prairie Creek Cemetery. A Graveside service will be held at Enterprise Cemetery on Sat- urday, November 20, 2021 at 3pm, with celebration of life to follow for both Mike and Don at Enterprise VFW. Don was born on April 11, 1950 in Enterprise to Robert J. (Tex) and Bonnie McCubbin Miller. After graduating from Enterprise High School in 1968, Don joined the US Navy. He served in both Vietnam and Korea aboard the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier as a boilerman. Upon discharge from the Navy in 1973, Don returned home to Wallowa County. He worked several jobs including roofing and construction before moving to Alaska in the early 1980’s. Don worked as a contractor then got on as a full-time employee, eventually becoming a supervisor for Peak Oil at Prudhoe Bay. He lived in Anchorage, Kenai, and Soldotna near the Kenai River, where he enjoyed fishing for Salmon on his days off. Wallowa County eventually drew him back home in the early 1990’s. Don became a commuter, flying between Prudhoe Bay and home every two weeks. Don retired in 2010 to help care for his dad who was in failing health. Don is survived by his sister Janelle Miller, his mom’s first cousin, Connie McCubbin Ferguson, his first cousin and hunting buddy, Rick Miller (Mindy), Nieces Wendy Roberts, Toni Bennett, Emily Linder, Genevieve Methvin (Chris), and nephew Charlie Linder (Katie). Great nieces Jordann Dewitt (Eric), Carsyn Roberts, Kara and Alayne Bennett, and Cleo Methvin. Great nephews Tyrel and Casey Rankin, Troy Bennett, Oliver Methvin, Henry and James Linder. Great- great nephew, Parker Dewitt. Also, many cousins and friends that are like fam- ily. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Mike, who died the same day.
