Janet Elizabeth (Vanaudenhaugen) Sims
January 12, 1934 - August 27, 2021
Janet Elizabeth (Vanaudenhaugen) Sims was born January 12, 1934, in
Hillsboro, Oregon to Anna May and Cornelius Vanaudenhaugen. She died Au-
gust 27, 2021, in Enterprise, Oregon, after a decade long battle with thyroid
cancer. She spent her childhood growing up on a farm with first her grandpar-
ents, then later her mother and siblings.
She attended Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) grad-
uating in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She was a
member of Delta Zeta sorority. She met and married John Sims while attend-
ing college. They lived in Corvallis until graduation when their first daughter,
Ann Marie, was born 1957. They later moved to Portland, where their second
daughter, Cathy Lee, was born in 1960. In 1965, the family moved to Bellevue,
Washington. John and Janet later divorced.
A believer in lifelong learning she attended the University of Washington
and earned a master’s degree in sociology. She later attended Seattle Pacific
University, in Seattle, and earned a master’s degree in Christian Education. She
later lived in Ocean Park, WA and Eugene, Oregon. Janet returned to Hillsboro
to live once again on the family farm. She lived there until moving to Enter-
prise in 2011 to be nearer her daughter, Ann.
During her daughters’ growing up years, she was a campfire girls’ lead-
er and worked for a time for Campfire Girls, USA. She was a member of the
master’s swim team, a competitive swim team for adults. She enjoyed family
camping, backpacking and canoe trips.
While living in Hillsboro she worked for Open Door assisting clients find
stable housing and connecting them with community resources.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, traveling and was an avid
reader. She also enjoyed cooking and keeping abreast of current events, and
volunteering. She also enjoyed the arts with season tickets to the Portland
Symphony and Seattle Ballet. One of her most significant accomplishments
was making wedding dresses for her daughter and niece.
She was member of the Lostine Methodist Church and took her faith seri-
ously. She also donated to numerous charities including the Washington State
University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, the Humane
Society, Komen for the Cure (a breast cancer research foundation), the ASPCA,
the Audubon Society, Defenders of Wildlife and OPB. She dearly loved cats and
rescued many on the farm from the coyotes or the highway. Over time she
gave more than a dozen loving homes. However, her favorite of all the pets she
had over the years, was the family dog, Freckles, her beloved English Springer
Spaniel.
She is survived by her daughter Ann (partner Sally Belsinger) Bloom,
Enterprise, Oregon, daughter Cathy (Frank) Luna, Mansfield, Texas, grandson
Austin (Ashley) Lobben, great- grandson (Caden), great-granddaughter (Pay-
ton), Mansfield, Texas, and nephew Bob (Vickie) Brewer, of Oakridge, Oregon
and Cousin Terri Carter and her daughter, Selena (Ben Larson) Carter, of Gas-
ton, Oregon, along with many loving friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna O. Hart, stepfather, Mar-
ion Hart, former husband, John P . Sims, in-laws, Rose and Paul Sims, sister-
in-law and brother-in-law, Genevieve and Bob Brewer, nieces Karen Marie and
Carolyn Stuber and nephew, Rodney Brewer.
Memorial contributions may be made to the WSU Veterinary Teaching
Hospital, the Humane Society, or the Lostine Methodist Church. A memorial
service will be held Thursday, September 23, at 4:00 p.m. at the Lostine Pres-
byterian Church.
