Robert Earl Bales November 16, 1934 - August 11, 2021 Robert Earl Bales, 86, of Joseph rode into the sunset on 8/11/21 at his daughter’s home in Mor- rison, Colorado. Bob was born and raised in Joseph, Oregon as the eldest son of Robert and Marstella Bales. He wrangled his brother Maurice and sisters Judy and Janice when he wasn’t delivering papers, setting bowling pins or boxing with his buddy Max. Bob married Barbara Anderson in 1952 and they raised 4 children, Terri, Jenee, Andy, and Jeff. Bob was known for ending the day at the sawmill and floating the Grande Ronde by lantern to get to elk camp. Weekends would find the family waterskiing on the lake. The family moved to Salmon, Idaho in 1968 where Bob partnered with his brother running the AA Western Wear store. They hunted elk, fished and had their kids out in the woods about every weekend for nearly a couple of decades. Bob was a licensed white water river guide on the Main and Middle Fork of the Salmon river. Bob & Barbara moved back to Joseph in 1987, divorced in 1988. Bob worked for the school district until retirement then worked on riding horses in the Eagle Cap at every opportunity. For many years he and his long time treasured partner Scottie Coombs traveled extensively and spent winters in Arizona where Bob rode the desert with friends. In 2017, Bob was honored as the Grand Marshall of Hells Canyon Mule Days. Those who knew Bob speak of his incredible work ethic, welding & me- chanical skills, leatherwork, photography, horse-sense, carpentry, marksman- ship and well, just really knowing a lot about everything. His kids can attest to his kind-hearted spirit and an incredible sense of fearless adventure. With great appreciation to a dad who taught honesty, work ethic, respect of others, how to shoot well, fix things, over-build stuff, haul tons of firewood and to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors. He was blessed with an adventurous & full life and left a great legacy to those who follow in his wake. At some point in the future Bob’s ashes will be released to join the beauty of his beloved Wallowa County.
