IN BRIEF Rotary awards $9,000 in scholarships ENTERPRISE — The Rotary Club of Wallowa County recently announced it awarded eight scholar- ships to students gradu- ating high school in Wal- lowa County. Six of those students were graduates of Enterprise High School. There also was a Wallowa High School and Joseph Charter School graduate in the mix. The eight scholarships awarded totaled $9,000. The winners were: • Brianna Micka, Enter- prise, $2,500. • Ella Moeller, Wal- lowa, $1,500. • Trace Evans, Enter- prise, $1,000. • Aubrina Melville, Enterprise, $1,000. • Casidee Harrod, Enter- prise, $750. • Kasey Duncan, Enter- prise, $750. • Jericho Peters, Enter- prise, $500. • Josey Wearin, Joseph, $500. According to a press release from the Rotary, scholarships are based on academic success and leadership in school and community activities. Financial need, as well as references from teach- ers and community mem- bers are considered. The awards are given at the beginning of a student’s sophomore year of higher education. A $7,500 grant from The Nature Conser- vancy helped fund this year’s scholarships. All told, Rotary had donated more than $70,000 to local students. Gary Bethscheider, owner of the Stubborn Mule, said they are trying to raise about $20,000 this year. “I am trying to make it better this year than last year,” Bethscheider said in a press release. Donations can be brought to him at the Stubborn Mule, mailed to the chamber at P.O. Box 1001, Joseph, OR 97846 or dropped off in donation boxes located around town. Checks should be made out to the Joseph Chamber of Commerce. The annual “Shake the Lake” fi reworks display, which usually is put on from a raft fl oating in the north end of the lake, is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. July 4. Last year, because of the coronavirus pandemic and social distancing restrictions, the Wallowa County Board of Commissioners and the Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce both canceled plans to help fund the eff ort. Bethscheider said the Wallowa County Chamber is donating $1,000. “So far, the county com- missioners have allowed us access to the county docks and Sheriff Joel Fish said he will assist us with the county boat,” and the board is donat- ing $2,000, he said. JOSEPH — A new exhibit that opened Tuesday, June 22, looks at the Nez Perce Treaties of 1855 and 1863, at the Josephy Cen- ter for Arts and Culture in Joseph, with a reception Sat- urday at 4 p.m. to conclude the exhibit. It also looks at a “Pro- posed Reservation for the Roaming Nez Perce Indi- ans in the Wallowa Valley in Oregon,” promulgated and then rescinded by Pres- ident U.S. Grant’s executive orders, according to a press release. The exhibit features historic drawings and paint- ings, facsimile pages from the treaties and explanations of treaty language that show their relevance to the pres- ent day. Three tribal artists, Kevin Peters, Phil Cash Cash and Kellen Trenal, will address the treaties in beads and paint. The art will be on dis- play during the exhibit and will be available for sale.
