Nez Perce elder Allen Pinkham Sr. talks about the importance of Nez Perce stories and place
names to understanding landscape at Old Chief Joseph’s gravesite near Wallowa Lake on
Sunday, May 2, 2021. The group of interviewers (Preston Amerman, Jane Fritz and filmmaker
Haley Thompson, far right) are working with the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture to develop
a project that will correlate Nez Perce stories with scientific understanding of some Wallowa
County and other regional features.

Fonzie, a 5-year-old Bernese mountain dog, takes his owner, Jeanne Hogan of rural Joseph, for
a walk at Wallowa Lake State Park on a chilly Sunday, May 2, 2021. “He’s a very kind, mellow
dog,” Hogan said. “But sometimes he’s just determined to go the way he wants to.”

There’s no shortage of homes for wood ducks and bats — just a place to put them — at Marr
Pond in Enterprise. Renovations of the storage barn on the east side of the park, which is part
of ongoing work to upgrade the facilities at the popular fishing spot, revealed a treasure trove
of the wooden boxes that now await new locations and projects.
Nez Perce tribal members Gloria Greene, right, and Liz Atto stop for asparagus at Rob
Hollingsworth’s Rob’s Produce stand in Enterprise. The two women were returning to Lapwai
on Thursday, April 29, 2021, after the ceremony that transferred land from the Methodist
Church Camp at Wallowa Lake to the Nez Perce Tribe. The produce stand will continue offering
asparagus from Milton-Freewater through early June, followed by cherries and then Walla
Walla strawberries, Hollingsworth said.
