A giant water bug (family Belostomatidae) peers out of Jamie
Sweers hat, Friday, April 2, 2021. Sweers, about 5 years old,
captured the 3-inch-long predator near a ditch adjacent to
the Wallowa football fi eld. According to the National Park
Service, giant water bugs live in freshwater ponds, marshes
and slow-moving pools in streams worldwide. They prey on
a surprising variety of aquatic life, including tadpoles, small
fi sh, insects and other arthropods.
