Death Notice
James (Jim) N Rounsavell passed away
on March 4, 2021 in Sacramento, California.
Memorial services will be held
at a later date.
Verla Jean Martin
Verla Jean Martin was born March 30, 1935 to
Earnest and Eva (Prince) Gibson in the old hospital
up on airport hill in Enterprise Oregon.
She grew up in and around the wild lands of
Wallowa where she enjoyed the mountains, rivers
and streams and became quite an accomplished
horseback rider.
Verla attended school in Wallowa where she
was an exceptional student, very active and a
popular cheerleader all through high school. She
also enjoyed representing Chief Joseph Days as a
princess showcasing her riding skills.
After high school Verla attended one year
of college in La Grande which was then Eastern
Oregon College.
On Feb 28th, 1954 she became the bride of Don
Martin and they moved to Portland Oregon where
Don attended barber school and Verla worked as a
secretary for “Wal Clippers.”
After Don became a barber they moved down
to the Snake River where Don became very very
busy as a barber for the men building the Brownlee Dam.
They much enjoyed the river life and in 1955 they had a son Daniel,
followed by another son Kelly in 1958.
After moving back into the valley where Don began his lifelong business
as a barber, Verla went to work as a dental assistant for Dr. Moffit in Enterprise.
In 1966 another son Cory was born.
Verla was a ferocious protector of her family and any other kids who
needed a place to be and at times took in other children into her own family.
After several years with the dentist Verla tested for and was hired in heavy
competition by the State of Oregon Department of Human Services. Shortly
after starting this job, her boss was killed and several co-workers were injured
when a train hit their car on way to a training. With the office in total disarray
as a result of this crisis Verla rose to the challenge, attended many out of area
trainings and was quickly promoted up the ranks where she continued to work
for the state until her retirement.
As a Caseworker for the state Verla was mostly known by her clients as
a very fair, hard working helpful and kind person; and by her supervisors as a
strong leader who could always implement whatever policies the state man-
dated even if they were hard to make sense of in this small rural community.
Verla was a staunch supporter of her children, and others in sports
activities with three extremely athletic and active boys. It is said you did
not want to sit beneath her in a wrestling match as she might have you in
a half Nelson while egging on her boys or their teammates! In fact Don and
Verla Martin were among the first parents to be inducted into the Enterprise
High School Wrestling Hall of Fame Booster Club, along with their son Kelly
who wrestled to a Gold Medal at State in 1973. Verla continued this love of
sports with her grandchildren when she faithfully followed them around the
state in their camper and motor home to area games and matches in All Stars,
District, and State playoffs for many years. She was extremely proud to have
had grand children who participated at state in Football, Wrestling, Baseball,
Dance Team, and Golf.
As a child Verla had contacted polio, and although she survived this ill-
ness to be incredibly strong child and woman, it did leave her with complica-
tions that caused much back pain in her later years.
Verla was also known as a stealth hunter and fisher, camp cook and care-
taker; and has a six point bull elk to her credit that used to hang in the old
Range rider. She was also incredibly active in bowling and had championship
trophies to show for her efforts.
After losing Don in 2012 and finding it hard to keep up with the needs of
their rural farmhouse; Verla moved to Milton Freewater to be with her young-
est son Cory, his wife Janie, and the Sandlin family who were lifelong friends
of the family. She was very grateful for this, and for them, and often talked of
the excellent care Janie gave her in her ending times.
She is survived by her sister Janice (Don Arnhart) sons Daniel, daughter-
in-law Peggy, Cory and his wife Janie. Grandsons Josh, Justin, Keldon, Tyler,
Mitchell and Trenton; grandaughters Erica, Jessica, Kasey and Joslyn, and sev-
en great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and
their families.
She was proceeded in death by her father, Earnest, her stepfather Kenneth
Dern, her mother Eva, her son Kelly, and a granddaughter Sarah Jean Martin.
Per Verla’s request there will be no services, but it is her wish that you all
raise your glasses in cheer for the love and laughter of family and friends and
toast to the continued strength in the struggles which are life!
She was interred in the family plot in the Wallowa Cemetery where
she joined many of her ancestors and her husband and life’s mate Don in
eternal rest.
