April 27, 1926 - January 15, 2021
Dottie passed away at her home in Walla
Walla, Washington on January 15, 2021. Born
April 27, 1926 in Wallowa, Oregon, she was the
youngest child of Roy and Lucy Schaeffer.
When Dottie was young she shared her time
between Wallowa Oregon where she graduated
high school in 1944 and her father’s pack station
up the Lostine River (Lapover). She learned to
ride a horse at a very early age and helped pack
campers into the high mountains. She was hap-
piest when she was on a horse!
Dottie married her first husband at the age of 20 and had one son, Roy C
Earhart (Sonny) who later passed in 2003. Dottie then married one more time
to Chuck Stephen, the love of her life who passed away in 1991.
Dottie believed that the secret to a long life was to keep moving. She exer-
cised regularly and rode her horse well into her 80’s. Her love of horses and the
mountains were a huge part of her memories and dreams in her later years.
Dottie was the last of her Schaeffer household.
Dottie is preceded in death by her parents Roy and Lucy Schaeffer,
husband Chuck Stephen and son, Roy C. Earhart. She is survived by her step-
son Carl Earhart, grandchildren Burke Earhart (Amy), Tracy Rosales, three

Rick Schaeffer (Cora), Randy Schaeffer (Becky) and several great-nieces and
nephews all of whom loved her very much!

David M. Crow
February 9, 1938 - February 3, 2021
David Melvin Crow was born February 9, 1938 to Melvin and Louisa Crow
of Lostine, Oregon. He grew up in Lostine with four siblings and a larger
extended Crow family, all of whom were involved in the family businesses of
M. Crow & Co and Crow Equipment Inc. He attended Lostine schools, grad-
uating from high school in 1955, then entered Eastern Oregon College the
following fall. The draft loomed large, however, and he chose to enlist in the
Air Force during that year, leading to a tour of duty in Fairbanks, AK.
Following his discharge, college beckoned him again, this time to
Macalaster College in St. Paul, MN. During his first year he met Beverly Bates.
They began studying together in the college library 60 years ago and were
married June 3, 1962. They raised three children: Dallas, Heather and Michael;
and were host parents to two international students: Diego de la Sovera
(Urugua) and Elja Valanne (Finland).
Dave made the decision to enter the ministry which led to completion
of a M.Div. degree from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary and later a D.Min.
degree from McCormick Presbytery Seminary. He began his ministry serving
in the Campus Ministry Center at Oregon State, moving to a Pastor position
in churches in Harbor Springs, MI; Boone, IA and Hudson, WI. He then had
an opportunity to return to Oregon, the place he loved, as General Presbyter
for the Presbytery of the Cascades in Portland. Following retirement from
that position, Dave filled in for brief terms in churches without a pastor.
He and Beverly had the opportunity to serve together in churches in Oregon;
Stavanger, Norway; and Hanapepe, Kauai.
Dave died February 3, 2021, after a long illness with kidney disease.
He is survived by Beverly, their children Dallas, Heather (Danny Martinez),
and Michael; grandchildren Rawley, Sidney and Wyatt; sisters Betty Sims and
Nancy McConville (Jim), and brother Steve (Joao DeCarvalho). His brother
Dallas preceded him in death.
Dave’s body has been donated to the OHSU body donation program
for education and research. Gifts to honor Dave’s life may be made to
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Presbyterian Peace Fellowship, or a local
church of your choice. A memorial service is being planned for a time when
friends and family are able to gather, remember and share stories.
