Wallowa County Chieftain
County marks new Armistice Day
OUT OF THE PAST
A Salem hunter was seri-
ously injured when he was
accidentally shot by one of
his hunting partners. Gary
E. Ballard, 17, was shot in
the thigh with a 30-06 rifl e.
The
Oregon
State
Game department reported
that 3,542 hunters had
been checked out of the
Chesnimnus unit and that
these hunters had bagged
415 bulls and 15 cows.

Armistice day was
observed in the county
almost as generally as the
Fourth of July and the new
holiday seems to have come
to stay. The chief celebra-
tion was in Joseph, where
the people of the town did
themselves proud by their
hospitality. A full day of
pleasure was arranged and
nothing happened to mar
the enjoyment of the large
number of people who
gathered for the occasion.
For the Enterprise and
Wallowa high schools the
football season will end
with a game next Thurs-
day, Thanksgiving, at Wal-
lowa. A large attendance is
expected as the rivalry is
keen. Many Enterprise peo-
ple will go to Wallowa if
the weather is good and the
roads permit driving.
An up-to-date auto
bus all enclosed and with
upholstered seats and glass
windows was put in ser-
vice by the Hotel Gotter, to
carry patrons to and from
the depot. Depot street is
now paved nearly to the
railroad station, and the gap
has been graveled so that
there will be no mud.

After this
arrest, he
was taken to the Umatilla
County Jail in Pendleton.
A dispatcher at the sher-
iff’s offi ce said the two
incidents were entirely
unrelated.
Lt. Kyle Hacker, of the
county’s Parole and Pro-
bation Department, said
Smith was arrested again
Nov. 10 for another proba-
tion violation related to the
original charge of unautho-
rized use of a vehicle. The
reasons for the probation
violation may well have
been different, Hacker said,
although he didn’t have
further information.

Gary Earl “Mac” McDonald, 74, of Joseph,
passed away on his birthday, Wednesday,
November 11, 2020 at a local care facility in
La Grande. Per his request, there will not be a
service.
Mac was born on November 11, 1946
in Los Angeles, CA to Earl and Lenore “Lee”
(Terlizzi) McDonald. He attended school in
California and was a proud member of the
1950’s rock and roll band called the “Del
Reys”. His fondest memories were of his time
playing in the band. He became an Oregonian at heart after moving to
Oregon in his early 30’s.
Mac worked as a heavy equipment operator most of his life before
retiring in Joseph, OR. He enjoyed fishing at Wallowa Lake with his best
buddies, Scott and Charlie. He loved the town of Joseph with all it’s
beauty and wonderful people. He spent much of his time hiking and
walking through town. His final days were spent at Wildflower Lodge
in La Grande where he received much love and joy offering everyone
daily hugs. His daughters would like to thank the staff at Wildflower and
Heart ‘n Home Hospice for taking such good care of Mac.
Mac is survived by his daughters, Michelle McDonald of San Rafael,
CA and Kimberly McDonald of Bend, OR. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Earl and Lee McDonald.
