Grace Arlene (Estes) Gray October 8 , 1931 – January 12, 2020 Grace Arlene (Estes) Gray went into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 12, 2020, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise. A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 7 th at Prairie Creek Cemetery in Joseph at 1:00pm. There will be a reception at the Hurricane Creek Grange immediately following the service until 4:00pm. Grace was born on Upper Prairie Creek at home October 8 th, 1931, to Hugh Esker Estes and Georgia May (Beard) Estes. She joined siblings Fern and Bud. She attended Joseph schools. On October 18 th, 1947, she married Tyrrell Mason Gray in Enterprise. Together they raised three children, Lois, Danny, and Janice. Grace & Tyrrell belonged to the American Legion, Hurricane Creek Grange, and Enterprise Christian Church. She cooked at the Communi- ty Connections meal site for many years. She was known there for her homemade biscuits. Grace was preceded in death by her husband Tyrrell, her parents Hugh and Georgia Estes, her brother-in-law Norman Witherrite, and sister-in-law Edith Estes. Her surviving relatives include her sister, Fern Witherrite, her brother Bud Estes, her children Lois (Bill) Ensminger, Joseph; Danny (Kay) Gray, Gresham; and Janice Reidel (Paul Kickman, recently deceased), Gresham; grandchildren Tim (Sheila) Ensminger, David Gray, Nikki (Dennis) McCarthy, Angela Ensminger, and Cody Stoler; great-grandchildren Morgan, Madison and Mason Ensminger and McKenna McCarthy; Numerous nieces nephews, and cousins. O’Malley was fi ned $200 and given 30 days in jail for killing one of the elk that was liberated at the head of the lake last spring. Showing their apprecia- tion of the Enterprise High School football team, of which their son Clarence is a member, Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Westfall honored the team with a dinner at Hotel Enter- prise. Covers were laid for twenty-one. A large crowd gathered at the opera house last night and enjoyed the dance given by the Catholic Ladies Aid society. A lunch counter, laden with a bountiful sup- ply of sandwiches and cake and coffee proved to be a good source of revenue to the ladies in charge. 75 YEARS AGO Oct. 25, 1945 Alfred Marks and son, Elmer, lost their home Sun- day by fi re. There was an unusually strong wind blow- ing and Mr. Marks and Mr. McManus, who were in the house, didn’t discover the fi re until the upstairs was all in fl ames and was fall- ing through. Very few things were saved. The Halladay plane landed in the Lester Robi- son fi eld bring Lou Warnock and Leland Duckett in from Joseph. This was the fi rst plane ever to land on Imnaha. The new Ford is massive in appear- ance, shows no skimping of materials, and has a number of refi nements over the 1942 models. 50 YEARS AGO Oct. 29, 1970 After eight days of stormy weather, residents of the Wal- lowa valley awoke Monday to fi nd the sun shining and the temperature far below freezing (hitting 11 above in Enterprise). Russell Roundy, a sci- ence major senior at Oregon State University, is a mem- ber of the 150-piece March- ing Band at the university. Rated one of the top march- ing bands in the West, this year the band will present the half time show for the San Francisco-Green Bay profes- sional football game. On Oct. 10 the Joseph FFA chapter sent three of their members to the national FFA Convention in Kan- sas City. Members attend- ing were Logan Lovell, Rick Sandlin and Brian Carper. 25 YEARS AGO Oct. 26, 1995 Jerry’s Main Street Mar- ket was burglarized shortly after 3 a.m. last Friday, the second time Joseph’s only grocery store was hit by bur- glars in 10 months. Cash and checks totaling over $6,000 were stolen. During the annual 4-H Family Appreciation Night award program at Cloverleaf hall, Friends of 4-H winners were announced. Joseph man arrested for parole violation Had been charged with assaulting offi cer, failing to register as sex off ender Chieftain staff ENTERPRISE — A Joseph man was appre- hended Monday, Oct. 19, on a statewide felony warrant for parole violation, accord- ing to the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Offi ce. The warrant for Errol Glenn Sherod, 58, was issued Oct. 14. He was originally charged with assault on an offi cer in Union County, the sheriff’s offi ce said Oct. 19. The sher- iff’s offi ce reported M o n d a y, Oct. 26, that Sherod also was charged with two Sherod counts of failure to register as a sex offender. Lt. THURSDAY, NOV. 5 JOSEPH FFA ALUMNI ONGOING A.A. online meetings ore- Barbara Kay Miller (Bronson) March 4, 1947 – October 16, 2020 Barbara Kay Miller (Bronson), 73, of Cald- well, Idaho, died on October 16, 2020, at home surrounded by her husband and three daugh- ters. Barbara was born on March 4, 1947 to S. E. (Slim) and Margaret (Peggy) Bronson in Rifle, CO. The family moved to Joseph, OR when Barbara was a small child and she spent all of her public school years there. On September 27, 1967 Barbara married the love of her life, Ronald Miller. Together they raised three daughters, Audrey, Rhonda and Lisa. Barbara spent her life caring for her family, as well as others. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, not only to her own family, but to many others who she felt needed love and comfort that a mother can give. She was a natural at caring for stray animals and stray people. Ron and Barbara built their life together and raised their children in Caldwell, ID, however, the Wallowa Mountains and her family and friends in Joseph, OR were always in her heart. Barbara became a dedicated & baptized Jehovah’s Witness on November, 16, 1975. She was devoted in her love of Jehovah God from that point forward in her life and shared her knowledge and love of the Bible with her children and many others. Barbara is survived by her husband, Ron Miller of Caldwell, ID, and her children, Audrey (Marc) Subin of Idaho Falls, ID, Rhonda (Wade) King of Salem, OR and Lisa (Guy) Bollinger of Caldwell, ID, her grandchildren, Torin (Nikki) Subin of Caldwell, ID, Lauren (Drake) Abrams of Caldwell, ID and Liam Subin of Idaho Falls, ID. Barbara is also survived by her two brothers, Don Bronson and Wayne (Donna) Bronson of Joseph, OR, as well as her nieces and nephews. bathroom of one of the city parks there. A La Grande police offi - cer, who now works for Oregon State Police, made contact with Sherod and a female in the restroom. The offi cer said Sherod resisted arrest, assaulted the offi cer and attempted to fl ee the scene. Sherod was in pos- session of 1.85 grams of methamphetamine at the time of the arrest, the offi - cer said. Hayes said the case was adjudicated and Sherod was sentenced to 25 months in prison to run concurrent with a Wallowa County case. He also was put on three years of post-prison supervision with a recommendation for substance-abuse treatment for the assault on an offi cer. Hayes said the charge of possession of meth resulted also in a guilty plea with 10 days in the Umatilla County Jail and a sentence run con- current with all previously imposed sentences. The resisting arrest charge was dismissed. Sherod has had other run-ins with the law. In March 2017, he was arrested by the Union County Sheriff’s Offi ce for possession of methamphet- amine and assault on an offi cer.
