OUT OF THE PAST
2,400 days without a lost-
time accident.
What was expected to be
a good season opener for the
Enterprise High School Sav-
ages turned to utter disap-
pointment when the grid-
iron team for Pomeroy
blanked them out at 20-0 Fri-
day night. Much of the fault
for the defeat can be laid to
early-season mistakes and
the loss of hard-running Jim
Pace during the fi rst period.
A blue-ribbon cake was
prepared by Dorothy Scott,
of Wallowa, in the 4-H cake
baking contest at the 1970
Oregon State Fair. In this
event, 4-H members prepared
a single-layer cake using soft
white wheat fl our.

Sarah “Sally” Catherine Seymour
One of the attractions at
the county fair is Bulger’s
animal circus. The show trav-
els in auto trucks now, but it
is a question how it can get
into Wallowa County over
the canyon road in its pres-
ent state.
On the Imnaha Road,
there has always been a half-
way stopping place, for the
accommodations of travel-
ers. A few years ago, Andrew
Osmundson built a roomy
house and barn for this busi-
ness, just west of the forks
of the Imnaha and Zumwalt
roads.

will teach this winter. She
received a degree in pen-

Michele Rene’ (Grove) Young
September 30, 1959 – September 2, 2020
Michele Rene’ (Grove) Young passed
away peacefully at home on September 2,
2020, surrounded by the love of family and
friends.
Michele was born in Seattle, Washington
on September 30, 1959, to Karen M. (Lytle)
Grove and Ronn A. Grove. She moved with
her family to California and lived at Camp
Pendleton before moving to Oregon where
she lived the rest of her life. Michele graduated
from Hillsboro High School and worked at the
Hillsboro Airport where she met the love of
her life, David Young. Michele and David married on September 15, 1979,
and eventually moved to Wallowa County where David had grown up.
After moving to the county, Michele worked at the local hospital
before being hired as the City Administrator for Enterprise, and proudly
and enthusiastically served in that role for 31-1/2 years before her
retirement in 2018. Michele loved Enterprise and poured her heart and
soul into making it the best it could be.
David and Michele were partners in every sense of the word for over
41 years and spent many years raising cattle together. To David’s chagrin,
Michele also decided she needed to raise goats for a time. One of their
favorite places to spend time was at the cabin they built together out
on their Zumwalt property. They also loved taking road trips and drove
across the country and back last year, spending time with family and
dodging tornados on the return trip.
Michele enjoyed running, hunting, biking, gardening, crafting,
shopping, and her many beloved pets. Michele was particularly fond of
golfing and proudly recalled earning a trophy competing in a Jr. LPGA
tournament at age 5. Michele adored and doted on her four nieces, four
nephews, two great-nieces and one great-nephew. She always had an
ear to listen and provided loving advice to anyone who needed it. She
had many friends and was often the instigator of fun, and the calm in
the storm. She demonstrated strength, determination, kindness, humor
and compassion throughout her life. Michele overcame many obstacles
and was the best daughter, sister, wife, aunt, stepmother, and friend
possible.
Michele was the oldest of four siblings. She is survived by her mother,
Karen M. McNair, Pensacola, Florida; father, Ronn A. Grove, Oregon City
Oregon; step-father, Rein Bertram, Sr., Beaverton, Oregon; sister, Windy
Grove, Portland, Oregon; sister, Lori Jones (Doug Jones), Rockaway, New
Jersey; and, brother, Rein Bertram, Jr., Beaverton, Oregon.
There will be a community celebration for Michele at a later date.
The family asks that Michele’s memory be honored through acts of
kindness and support for the City of Enterprise.

Lester Berry “Joe” Estes
May 24, 1960 - August 10, 2020
Joe was born on May 24, 1960 in
Enterprise, Oregon to Lawrence Junior and
Barbara Ann (Sannar) Estes.
Joe attended school in Joseph until
1972 when his family moved to Umapine.
Joe graduated from Umapine High School in
1978. He served in the US Navy from 1980 to
1984 and he spent 25 years working for the
Department of Corrections in Walla Walla,
Washington.

devoted father. On February 25, 2016 Joe married Linda Waters and they
lived in Wallowa, Oregon, where they raised horses and cows and loved
spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Joe was called home too soon by our Lord and Father on August 10,
2020 in a tragic automobile accident. Joe was a loving father to his sons,
who meant the world to him. He also adored his step children, Megan,
Rylee and Ryder and two grand-daughters, Isabell and Roralee.
Joe was an amazing friend to those lucky enough to know him. He
could always be relied upon to fix anything, and provide a little comic
relief in just about any situation.
Joe spent his entire life dedicated to the people that loved him: he
was a coach, a best friend, a brother, a father, a husband and grandfather.
Joe touched the lives of more people than can be counted. Our world is a
little darker with the sudden passing of Joe. We know someday we will
all get to walk God's green pastures with him, until then, we'll just enjoy
the ride. His family and friends love and miss him so much.
