The Josephy Center presents a virtual exhibit
Historical postcards from
the Edsel White collection
displayed online
On Monday, May 4, the Josephy Center
opened the virtual exhibit of historical post-
cards from the Edsel White collection.
It is curated by Wallowa historian David
Weaver. Seth Kinzie has done a masterful
job of putting up the front and back images
of the postcards, and accommodating a read-
ing (by voice specialist Amanda Berry) of a
brief essay based on each card, written by
Weaver. He examines the image and mes-
sage on the card as it all relates to the his-
tory of Wallowa County 1907-15 and the
national “craze” for postcards, the “social
media” of the day.

Summer Fishtrap goes
virtual: July 6-12, 2020
By Ellen Morris Bishop
Wallowa County Chieftain
In the long shadow
of COVID-19, the Sum-
mer Fishtrap Gathering
of Writers will be held
online as a Virtual Week-
long Writing Conference.
Using
this
year’s
theme, Courage, as the
inspiration, the Summer
Fishtrap faculty, Fish-
trap’s partners at Eastern
Oregon University, and
local community partici-
pants will be able to bring
as much of the Summer
Fishtrap experience to
your home as possible.
Fishtrap’s decision to
go virtual came as a rec-
ognition that “There is
nothing more import-
ant than the safety of
our community, whether
that’s the community of
writers who come to the
lake, or our local remote
Wallowa County Commu-
nity,” said program direc-
tor Mike Midlo. “While
we are seeing signs that
efforts to “flatten the
curve” have had a posi-

tive impact, there is a lot
of uncertainty about when
it will be safe for people
to travel or gather in large
groups. At the same time,
we know there is a real
need for writers to come
together to share work
and build skills. Provid-
ing a virtual experience
gives us the ability to do
just that while protecting
our Fishtrap community.”
“We’ll miss seeing
everyone at Wallowa Lake
this summer,” says Fish-
trap Executive Director
Shannon McNerney, “but
the public health crisis has
revealed how Fishtrap can
provide high quality writ-
ing workshops and events
to even more people no
matter where they live.
We hope veteran Fishtrap-
pers and new ones alike
will give our Virtual Sum-
mer Fishtrap experience
a try and join the unique
community of writers that
is Summer Fishtrap. This
year, online.”

Janis Carper releases Sweet
Relief: a new solo album
By Ellen Morris Bishop
Wallowa County Chieftain
Janis Carper can’t let her
guitar sit idle for any length
of time. On Wednesday May
6, at 7 p.m. she’ll release
her newest album, four-
teen original songs com-
posed between April and
December, and “recorded
during the COVID-19 pan-
demic, quarantined in my
basement studio with ‘way
too many instruments at my
disposal,” she said. It’s the
prolific songwriter and per-
former’s first solo album in
a decade.
And it’s a solo tour de
force, showcasing Carper’s
mastery of lyrics, instru-
ments and voice from the
lilting first cut of “Sweet
Relief” to the bossa-no-
va-like beats of “Fire and
Flood” and “Sing Coyote”,
a jazzy “Losin’ Ground”,
the slow waltz of “The Long
Goodbye” and thought-pro-
voking, evocative final cut,
“Let It Go.” There’s some-
thing for everyone in this
album.

Janis Carper will release her new solo album, Sweet Relief, at
Facebook event on May 6 at 7 p.m.
The album was mixed
and mastered by local
audio-auteur Bart Budwig.
“It seemed kind of funny to
Dropbox it all to someone
who just lives across town,”
Carper said. “But he did a
great job.”
The release “party” will
be on Carper’s Facebook
page. And it’s her birthday
too. So there are two rea-
sons for celebration.
“I’ve got a little bit of
everything on the album,”
she said. “It’s a collec-
tion of songs I wrote pretty
quickly and steadily, and
that I’m ready to send off
into the hills.”
With the summer con-
cert and festival season
put on hold by COVID-
19, Carper felt that a digi-
tal release was the best way
to go. She’ll have CD’s in
another week or so, but
right now there’s no place
to sell them. Someday, she
said, when the Bookloft is
open again, where there are
concerts and the Music Alli-
ance is sponsoring events,
those CD’s will come in
handy. For now, digital is
the way to go. Her album
will be available on Spo-
tify and other digital down-
load and streaming services
soon. But she wants to have
that Facebook release party
on Facebook, regardless.
After all, what better
way to celebrate your birth-
day? 7 p.m. Wednesday. Be
there!
the power to create
a magical getaway.
