During her lifetime, Judy was a wonderful wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She was deeply loved, and would want for us to celebrate and remember the joy she brought to all. Judy was born June 18, 1942 in Fort Wayne IN to Elmer Andrew Walker and Virginia Ray Jolly, and was the oldest of three children. The family moved to the remote town of Dora OR in 1947 where her father worked in the forest products industry. While there, Judy attended a one-room schoolhouse, graduated from Coquille High School in 1960, and joined the Women’s Army Corps the same year. Over the course of the next two years, she was stationed at Fort McClellan AL and Fort Huachuca AZ. In 1961, Judy married Robert Lee Stone, and they had four wonderful children. The family lived in Arcata and Crescent City CA, and Roseburg and Enterprise OR. As time allowed, she continued her studies at Umpqua Community College and College of the Redwoods. Judy dedicated herself to being an attentive and loving mother and wife. She held odd jobs to help support her family until her children were older, and she decided to step up in the service of her state and country again. Judy re-enlisted with the Oregon Army National Guard in 1977 and would go on to complete 21 years of service with full military retirement. Judy began a career with the U.S. Forest Service in 1979 and worked with the agency as an Office Assistant and Procurement Technician on the Wallowa-Whitman, Rogue River, and Siskiyou National Forests in Oregon until her retirement in 1998. Judy was also an avid reader, a creative cook, and loved to travel. She loved animals and adopted several dogs and cats from local animal shelters. As a very kind, generous, and spiritual person, Judy’s faith in God was instrumental in guiding her throughout her life. She will be greatly missed and never forgotten. William Paul Grow May 31, 1948 - December 22, 2019 On a warm, sunny Sunday William “Paul” Grow left this earth doing what he loved; hiking along with his backpack hanging half off one shoulder, saw inside in case pruning or cleaning up needed done along the way, living in the moment, embracing the beauty around him “if you’re into that kind of thing” he would say. He was raised on an Iowa pig farm in Guthrie Center with 3 brothers, John, Robert & Gary and a sister Dolores by a hard working no-nonsense Dad and a loving Mother (William & Anna) becoming the best of both of them. It was in high school he joined a band called “The Lost” and his love of music became one of his greatest gifts. He was a drummer with many bands and joined friends for informal jam sessions through the years. Music CD’s would be loaned out in library fashion along with a verbal history of why they were so great. He never lost that passion. He was in the Army during the Vietnam War; Honorably Discharged. He traveled many countries including a 6 month bicycle tour of New Zealand where he acquired the taste of Black and Tans and affection for the Maori’s. Paul attended college in Ashland, OR then to LaGrande working at Spouts Springs and becoming an arborist who held a special love for the science and shape of trees. Moving to Wallowa County in the 70’s eventually opening Crosstown Traffic Bike shop in Joseph and later moving to Enterprise, his career until retirement. He was always about the kids. Many of us got an introduction into mountain biking or skateboarding there, while he loved the sport you were on your own if you bought a Wal-Mart bike and wanted him to fix it. Paul was revolutionary in mountain biking, going places others wouldn’t have dreamed of. Hells Canyon Bike Tours tag line was “We bring them back alive.” A quick wit and sarcasm was another one his many talents. To be on the other end you knew you were a friend. He biked, hiked and skied all over this county. His ski gear was old and outdated yet it never stopped him from getting out there. Paul’s greatest love and achievement was his daughter April. The unconditional, pure love he held for her is an inspiration to all parents. In her words “He taught me that money and things are not important but love, experiences, books, music and the mountains are what matter most.” He lived his words and fortunate were those who were able to share a hike, bike, ski, music and conversation with him; our lives have been enriched by his passions. He was born May 31, 1948 in Jefferson, Iowa and left us Dec. 22, 2019 in Joseph, Oregon. These are only dates – what his life was about are all the days in between. Beauty comes not in things but experiences with nature and each other.
