Wallowa, Lostine not left behind in bazaar bevy
Lower Valley had
holiday bazaars
Saturday
By Bill Bradshaw
Wallowa Valley Chieftain
Wallowa and Lostine
were not to be left behind
in the bevy of bazaars held
recently, with the Christ-
mas Bazaar at the Wal-
lowa Senior Center and the
Southfork Grange Christmas
Bazaar in Lostine on Satur-
day, Dec. 7.
Karolyne Doss, who was
in charge of the Wallowa
bazaar, said there were 23
vendors there. She said she
hoped the proceeds from
renting the tables and sales
of food would allow a dona-
tion to the senior center of
$600 to $700 when all was
said and done.
The scent of homemade
clam chowder and ham-
and-bean soup greeted those
who entered the senior cen-
ter. Doss was pleased with
the turnout to see the wide
variety of rugs, hats, quilts,
tanned deerskin, holiday
décor, jewelry, candy, home-
made soap and more at the
bazaar.
In addition to the sights
and smells, the Wallowa
bazaar was the only one vis-
ited Saturday where live
music greeted visitors. John
Raines on guitar and Laura
Skovlin on banjo played and
sang holiday favorites for
bazaar-goers. The pair are
members of Wallowa Val-
ley’s Local Yokels musical
group.
But Lostine was not to be
outdone. Three years after
the grange burned, it’s been
refurbished and is now open

Live music was part of the fun as John Raines and Laura Skovlin, two members of the Local
Yokels music group, play Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Christmas Bazaar at the Wallowa Senior
Center.

for business by holding the
bazaar there.
“We have resurrected our-
selves,” said Rowan Cypher,
who headed up efforts at the
Southfork Grange.

in Function, watches as Kathie Baird and
Kathy Nelson look over items at her vendor’s
table Saturday, Dec. 7, during the Southfork
Grange Christmas Bazaar in Lostine.
She said she was pleased
with the turnout and the
grange hopes to make the
bazaar a yearly event. She
said that since they have
virtually no overhead, they
can offer table rentals at the
rock-bottom price of $5 each.
“This is the place to sell,”
Cypher said, adding that 13
vendors took her up on the
offer this year.
A colorful Christmas
is circling Wallowa this
season with the Wallowa
Library at the center. Deb-
bie Lind, Library Direc-
tor, has created a commu-
nity Christmas coloring
contest, where participants
from toddler to adult may
pick up an age-appropri-
ate picture to color, return
it for posting on the library
window, and community
members may vote on
their selection. Prizes will
be awarded for each age
category.
Lind formed the idea
when she spoke with
patrons and members of
the Friends of Wallowa
Library on ideas to increase
use of the library. The book
selections range from out-
of-print publications to the
newest best seller. Shelves
are also lined with a wide
array of DVD movies for
all ages.

Wallowa librarian Debbie
Lind
has
started
a
Christmas coloring contest.
Wallowa residents and
library patrons will be
able to judge the entries
beginning Dec. 17. They’ll
be displayed in the Library
windows.
Local participation in
the library is ever on Lind’s
mind.
“This is a safe and quiet
place, where students can
do homework or just hang
out. I help people on our
computers complete online
job applications, food han-
dler’s licenses, unem-
ployment forms and other
internet activities.” The
interview is interrupted as
a patron asks for help to
open a computer fi le.
Holly Goebel brings her
three year old daughter,
Laini, to check out books.
“She’s working on her col-
oring sheet. She just does
a little during quiet time
at home,” she said. “There
is no pressure. We learned
about it when a friend and
I brought our children here
for a play date.”
“This library could not
function without our vol-
unteers,” Lind said. Volun-
teers allow me to do many
other library things, like
organize coloring contests.
They are invaluable.”
Christmas
color-
ing sheets were distrib-
uted to the elementary and
junior high students. Oth-
ers may pick up coloring
sheets at the Library. Com-
pleted pictures are due by
December 13. They will be
displayed on the Library
windows December 16-23
where the Wallowa com-
munity will be the judges
and vote. Winners will be
announced December 20
and prizes can be picked
up the week of December
23.
Lind looks forward to
displaying the artwork.
“This is a fun event for
everyone to enjoy the
library.”
