    FALL
OUTDOOR
GUIDE
WELCOME!
BLACK LOGO
N
othing says “Outdoors” more than northeast Oregon in the fall. Tamaracks
and aspen turn golden. Elk bugle. Trails, less laden with summer hikers,
beckon. Mornings are crisp, afternoons mellow. Snow accentuates the high
country. Whether you are a hunter, hiker, cyclist, gardener intent on completing
fall planting, or just like to sit on a log, inhale the scents of autumn and relax,
outdoors is the place to be.
In this guide you’ll find information and stories about hunting, including a hunter who
defied all the odds and won two hunts for bighorn sheep—near Lookout Mountain in
Baker County. And along with other stories of hunting and forecasts for hunters, we have
sumptuous local recipes for elk, deer, and duck.
For cyclists, there’s a guide to several great fall bike rides around the region. For
photographers and those who hunt with a camera, there are suggestions for how to get
truly memorable shots—with your cell phone or camera. And there are other informative
articles, too.
Few places in North America offer the diversity of landscapes and outdoor experiences
that you can find here. Hells Canyon and the Snake River breaks offer hunters and hikers
a respite from on-rushing winter. The Wallowas and Elkhorns epitomize alpine splendor.
Zumwalt Prairie and the USFS lands to its north harbor abundant wildlife, including elk,
deer, and upland birds. Ladd Marsh is a birder’s and bird-hunter’s paradise.
This is EO Media Group’s first regional guide to fall activities across Baker, Union,
and Wallowa County. It is a collaboration of the staff writers, editors, and reporters of the
Baker City Herald, La Grande Observer, and Wallowa County Chieftain, all of whom are
now part of the EO Media Group family. We all know and love northeastern Oregon, and
are thrilled to share it with you.
