A2 ANNOUNCEMENTS Wallowa County Chieftain Wednesday, July 24, 2019 OBITUARIES Keith Wortman “Sonny” Richard Hagenah Beverly Harriet Newark May 1, 1929 - July 4, 2019 October 7, 1943-July 19, 2019 December 29, 1926-July 11, 2019 Keith Wortman, 90, passed away peacefully at home on July 4, 2019. He was born on May 1, 1929, on Diamond Prairie near Wal- lowa, the fourth son of Ord and Ruth (Col- pitts) Wortman. Throughout his 90 years he resided in many places including spending most of his childhood on Powwatka. He attended the Powwatka School through 8th grade and then attended Wallowa High School. At 16, his parents bought the Imnaha Store and he too moved to Imnaha. It was there that he met his wife of 65 years, Janis Warnock, daughter of Jesse and Hazel Warnock. Not long after they met, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1950- 1953, including serving over- seas in the Korean War. Keith and Janis were married April 10, 1954. For most of their married years, they resided in various parts of Wallowa County, but also lived in Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, and Washing- ton, as Keith followed var- ious construction and log- ging jobs. He operated heavy equipment and owned log- ging trucks, loving being able to work outside and in the woods. He and Janis always had a large garden, and they enjoyed being able to grow and preserve their own food. He also enjoyed hiking, berry picking, and wood cutting. In their retirement years, they trav- eled throughout the United States, resid- ing for four years in their RV. They vis- ited 49 states, and 5 Canadian provinces in that time – hik- ing and exploring all the way. His great- est joys were being in the outdoors, as well as playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Janis, four children — Becky Wort- man of La Grande, OR; Diana Wortman of Enterprise, OR; Mary (and husband Jerry) Hope of O’Fallon, IL; and Thomas (and wife Nelly) Wortman of Lawton, MI — ten grandchildren, fi ve great grandchildren, sister-in-law Judy Wortman, and numer- ous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers (Lynn, Lowell, Elmo, and Pat Wort- man), and grandson Lance Strickland. Keith requested no services, and his ashes will be laid to rest in the niche wall at the Enterprise Ceme- tery. Donations in his name may be made to Friends of the Enterprise Cemetery. His funeral ser- vice will be held Sat., August 3, at 3 p.m. at the fam- ily ranch in Los- tine, OR (83702 Hwy 82 97857). Followed by cele- bration of life and a potluck BBQ. Born Oct. 7, 1943, in Lewis- ton, Idaho. Grad- uated high school from Anatone, Wash., then served in the mil- itary until a family emer- gency brought him back to the family ranch in Par- adise, Ore. Beverly was born December 29, 1926 to Ber- thold G. Skjei and Hilda J. Tan- gen in North- wood, North Dakota. She graduated from Northwood High School and later she mar- ried Donald J. Newark. She was a homemaker and she loved her home life gardening doing arts and crafts and enjoyed bowl- ing. Her husband Donald and her brother Lon Skjei, along with her three sis- ters Irene, Lorraine, and Gladys preceded her in death. Survivors are sons David L. of Arizona and Oregon, Thomas C. of Nevada, and daughter Marilyn Ash and husband Harvey of Nevada, and her sister Lynn Skei of Oregon. A Memorial Mass will be held at St Katherine Catho- lic Church in Enterprise as well as a memorial service in Las Vegas later this fall. Memorials in her memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice. The largest of these fi res, the Cabin Creek Fire, is approximately 5 acres in size and is located about 1½ miles north of Rocky Flat. The fi re was reported at 10:40 a.m. and is burning in grass, brush and timber. Firefi ghters utilized aerial resources today to support suppres- sion efforts, including a single engine air tanker and air attack. Current resources on scene include three Umatilla National Forest engines and one Umatilla National Forest hand crew. With increased dry weather, fi re offi cials want to remind everyone that the current fi re danger rat- ing remains at moderate. No public use restrictions are in effect on the forest. Small fi res signal fi re season is underway in NE Oregon East Oregonian PENDLETON — Fire crews on the Heppner Ranger District of the Umatilla National Forest responded to new smoke reports following pass- ing thunderstorms early Monday. Signifi cant lightning activity occurred across the Heppner Ranger Dis- trict, with approximately fi ve new incidents on the Umatilla National For- est reported to the John Day Interagency Dispatch Center.
