A6 NEWS Wallowa County Chieftain Wednesday, June 12, 2019 Elks to celebrate Flag Day June 14 The Enterprise Elks 1829 will honor America’s fl ag with its annual Flag Day Ceremony on Friday, June 14, 2019 at 6:00 PM at the Wallowa County Courthouse Fountain of Honor. Elks have always been moved in the presence of the fl ag of the United States, which is why, in 1907, Elks members adopted a resolution des- ignating June 14 as Flag Day. In 1911, the Grand Lodge mandated that all local Lodges observe Flag Day with appropriate cer- emonies, making the Elks the fi rst national fraternal organization to require the observance of Flag Day. On August 3, 1949, Pres- ident Harry S. Truman, himself a member of the Order, permanently des- ignated June 14 as Flag Day by signing an act of Congress. Flora School Education Center offers summer classes By Ellen Morris Bishop Wallowa County Chieftain Steve Tool/Chieftain (L to R) Old Time Fiddlers musicians, Larry Richardson, John Raines and Caleb Samples, play to a very appreciative audience at the Hurricane Creek Grange on the evening of Saturday, June 8. Old Time fi ddlers pack grange hall Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain Wallowa County is a music county. Virtually any time of the year you can look at Facebook, read the Chieftain and any number of event calendars and fi nd live music in abundance. While the rock, blues and Ameri- cana genres are all well-rep- resented on the local scene, old-time country music can be hard to fi nd. That’s where the Blue Mountain Old Time Fid- dlers Association comes in to save the day. With mem- bers from nearly every county in the Blue Moun- tains region, the association can satisfy the cravings for some foot-stompin’ music over the whole of northeast- ern Oregon. Someone must have put in a call to the fi ddlers as more than 20 performers appeared at a well-attended performance at the Hurri- cane Creek Grange on the evening of Saturday, June 8. While the show went from 6-9:30 p.m., those up for eating out were welcome to repast at the grange start- ing at 5 p.m. As 6 p.m. rolled around, emcee Denny Lang- ford warmed up the crowd with his keen sense of humor while still showing respect for the audience and musi- cians, and by the time the fi rst musicians hit the stage, the near-capacity crowd had settled back for a rip-roar- ing time listening to every- thing from semi-contempo- rary songs to 19th-century stompers. Even Nat King Cole’s “Ramblin’ Rose” made an appearance. While many of the musi- cians were from out of the area, local fi ddle phe- nom, Caleb Samples, per- T HE B OOKLOFT formed while fi lling both backup and lead musician roles while playing with Larry Richardson and John Raines. As lead musician, Samples fi ddled his way through “Cherokee Shuf- fl e,” “Over the Waves” and a medley of “Big Coyote,” “Twinkle Star” and “Billy in the Lowground.” While the vast majority of the audience sported gray hair, Samples was proba- bly one of the youngest per- formers at the age of 38. “I’ve been doing this since I was about 11,” he said. “It’s traditional, kind of. My mom and dad got me started pretty young, and I’ll keep doing it.” Flora, Oregon—Skills necessary to life and to creating a home by pio- neers begin at Flora School this coming week- end, lasting throughout the summer and into the fall. The Flora School Educa- tion Center, dedicated to promoting pioneer skills and the restoration of the actual school building in Flora, will provide several chances to learn black- smith skills, sewing, quilt- ing, cookies from scratch and many more classes and activities. Classes vary as to loca- tion (a forge building class was held in Walla Walla this spring), skill level and subject matter. Mike Row- ley, a “Forged In Fire” Champion, will host and teach a bladesmith class at his smithy in Enterprise (Oregon).
