NEWS Wallowa.com Wednesday, June 5, 2019 A17 Libraries launch summer reading programs By Ellen Morris Bishop Wallowa County Chieftain Just in time for summer vacation, Wallowa County’s public libraries have rolled out their summer reading programs. While Wallowa and Joseph offer opportuni- ties for children to earn fun rewards, Enterprise is upping the game with a program for adults as well as another for children. Have you ever wanted to participate in a fun kids sum- mer reading program, but couldn’t because you were too old? Well, this summer, you’re in luck! The Enter- prise Public Library is offer- ing one summer program for children … and another for adults. The Enterprise program for the younger readers opens June 10. For pre-schoolers, parents can set their own goal for time or pages read to their youngsters. Once they reach the goal, they’ll be entered in a drawing for family awards. Students in grades kinder- garten through sixth-grade will set an independent read- ing goal, and earn prizes for the number of pages or hours they read in the library. Sev- enth through 12th-grade stu- dents can visit the library each week and sign up for a weekly drawing. Each week one lucky teen will win $10 in buckskin bucks. “We want this to be a fun program,” said Enterprise library direc- tor Denine Rautenstrauch. “It also helps younger kids retain and sharpen their read- ing skills so they don’t loose ground during the summer.” If you don’t qualify to par- ticipate in the kid’s fun, don’t despair. Adults of any age can be part of the adult sum- mer reading program. Read a book, any book, and write a brief review. Your name goes into a drawing for a $20 Bookloft certifi cate. If you are really lucky, your book review might be chosen for publication in The Chief- tain. The even better news? There’s a new winner EACH WEEK! (You can probably get pizza if you just show up as well …) Titled “The Universe of Stories,” the program offers tangible rewards, from mag- nets and helmets to back- packs, that kids can earn for reading. “Kids can read independently at home” said librarian Debbie Lind. “For every 30 minutes they read they will earn a dollar in play-money credit. They can save up their “money” and “buy a more valuable item at the end of the reading pro- gram, or spend their credits on smaller things as they go along.” The program at the Wallowa Library ends July 19. The program begins June 10, and will run for fi ve weeks, with incentives for reading. The Joseph Program is sim- ilar to Wallowa’s, follow- ing “The Universe of Sto- ries” theme. Librarian Eric Shoudel plans to award one “reader buck” for every half- hour of reading. Those “bucks” can be used to purchase a variety of unworldly games and toys, and even some useful items, including magnets, a plan- etarium planetary projec- tor, kits to build models of the Mars Rovers, and other things. For details, stop by the Joseph Library. Wallowa City Library plans special June events: The Wallowa City Library is providing three outstanding community events in June. All are free and open to the pub- lic. Most are offered in the meeting room at Wal- lowa City Hall, where there is more room than at the library. June 10, 10 a.m.-noon at Wallowa City Hall: Pizza party and sign-up for Wallowa City Library summer program for kids. Learn about the rewards available, and how you can earn them. June 13, 7-8 p.m. Benefi t concert, featur- ing Ghostwind, in the Library’s garden. Free. Donations to the library’s new mural by Anna Vogel and other planned remodels and repairs are appreciated. June 20, 7 p.m. Chas- ing the Moon. A sneak preview of a PBS series about the U.S. Moon pro- gram. The library will show a PBS documentary about Neil Armstrong and the fi rst man ever on the moon. June 27, 1 p.m. at Wallowa City Hall: Sto- ryteller Christopher Leebrick will recount engaging folk tales to children of all ages. Lee- brick has enthralled audi- ences with his masterful storytelling talents since he was 13 years old. His repertoire includes folk tales, legends, and original stories. Based in Portland, he has toured the Northwest and con- tinental U.S., Australia, France, and Israel, giv- ing award-winning per- formances to audiences of all ages.
