Eagles track squad run, jump to daylight Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain T he Joseph track squad showed some merit at the La Grande Invita- tional track meet on Saturday, April 13. In a fi eld of 14 teams, the boys team fi nished fourth with 54 points while the girls fi nished 10th with 24 points. For the boys, superstar run- ner, Henry Coughlan, car- ried the torch, placing third in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:23.06 and second in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:39.29. Teammate Bayden Menton placed sixth in the 800 meters and fi fth in the 1500 meters with times of 2:09.36 and 4:29.32 respectively. Ian Goodrich placed 10th in the 1500 with a time of 4:54.59. Senior Tyler Homan placed second in the 300 meter hur- dles with a time of 43.59 while also participating in the fi fth place 4x100 relay with team- mates Juston Rogers, Carsen Littlepage and Trey Wand- schneider with a time of 46.87. The fi eld element saw Jonah Staigle place fi fth in the discus with a toss of 95-06. Joseph furnished three top- ten fi nishers in the pole vault. TJ Grote fi nished third with a 11-06 vault while Kade Kil- gore leaped 10-06 for fi fth place and wrestling star Ste- ven Beckman placed seventh at 7-00. For the girls, Ella Coughlan placed fi rst in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.75 while sidekick Haley Miller placed fi fth with a 2:42.07. Ellyse Tin- gelstad aced the 3000 meters with a time of 11:07.44. Coach John Roberts was happy with the meet results as several athletes bowed out early for prom. Roberts said Ella Coughlan’s performance in the 800 was particularly pleasing as she’s never run the race. “She runs the 400 for me and I know she’s fast,” Rob- erts said. He said she had pre- viously performed well when she ran a leg of the 4x800 relay, so he wasn’t worried except when she exploded off the blocks. “I had to hold her back on the fi rst lap,” he said. Ellyse Tingelstad came in for some coach kudos when she ran a dynamite 3000 meters, coming in 35 seconds ahead of the second place fi n- isher and the fastest time in the state at the moment. Like Coughlan, Roberts had to hold Tingelstad back at the beginning. Tyler Homan also earned some praise for his perfor- mance in the 300 hurdles. Bayden Menton also got some coach congrats for his perfor- mance as did teammate Henry Coughlan. The Eagles next travel to compete in the Pepsi Invita- tional in Union on Saturday, April 20. Few practices don’t faze Outlaws thinclads Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain Despite inclement weather hindering the out- laws’ ability to practice, the squad made an impressive showing at the La Grande Invitational on Saturday, April 13. The girls placed third while the boys placed 10th in a fi eld of 14 teams. Senior Karli Bedard led the girls with a fi rst-place performance in the high jump with a leap of 5-00, and a sixth place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19.19. Hero Peters also proved a tough opponent, placing third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.63 and third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.17. She was also a mem- ber of the fi rst place 4x100 meter relay team. Senior Shelby Mon- crief placed third in the 100 meters with a 13.57 time and also ran on the winning 4x100 meter relay team, which also contained Char- lotte McDonald and Savan- nah Vaughn. Relay time was 53.51. Sidney Stone- brink placed eighth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19.60. Ashley Wil- son placed sixth in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:33.30, and fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:39.51. McDonald also placed ninth in the 400 meters. On the fi eld side, Gianna Espinoza placed third in discus with a 87-01.50 toss and Stonebrink also placed ninth in the high jump going 4-04 over the bar. On the boys’ side, Gar- rett Thorne placed seventh in the 100 meters with an 11.93 time while always-re- liable Zac Knapp cruised to a fourth place fi nish with a time of 4?:25.58 in the 1500 meters. The 4x100 relay team took third with a time of 46.12 with members Shane Lund, Foster Hobbs, Jericho Peters and Thorne leading the way. On the fi eld side, Joe Robb heaved the shot put 38-06.50 for a sev- enth place fi nish in his fi rst time at the event. Johnny Sarbacher placed sixth in the discus with a 92-07 throw. Colby Harris placed 10th in the long jump with a 17-09.25 leap of faith and third in the triple jump with a 38-06 effort. Coach Dan Moody was proud of his team’s show- ing, especially with only two weeks of outdoor prac- tice. Also, some partici- pants went home early to prepare for prom night. “We went out with about 45 kids and came home with about fi ve of them,” Moody said. “I was espe- cially pleased by how good the girls looked. They were at the top in a lot of events.” The coach was also impressed with the boys’ performance. The 4x100 relay team had a new sub- stitute and still managed a third place fi nish. “Overall, we’ve done pretty well in all the meets so far this year,” Moody said. “It’s going to take some time.” The squad next competes at the Pepsi Invitational in Union on Saturday, April 20, followed by the Weston McEwen Small Schools Invitational on Tuesday, April 23. Coach Marvin Gibbs brought four golf- ers to the Big River tournament in Umatilla. Golf prodigy, Tori Suto, did her usual bang-up job on the course shooting a 77 for the win in the girls bracket. Three boys competed, with Michael Diggins shooting a 102. Golfers Frank Westerman and Willie Gibbs shot a 131 and 140 respectively. “They’re new,” he said. “They’re just getting started.” The team next travels to John Day on Friday, April 19 for a tournament.
