A6 NEWS Wallowa County Chieftain Wednesday, April 3, 2019 Funds for economic innovation may be coming to Wallowa County By Christian Ambroson Wallowa County Chieftain Wallowa County may get some much needed fi nancial relief in 2019. More accu- rately, it may now fi nally realize fi nancial benefi ts that it, along with other Ore- gon counties, should have been receiving for some time now. The new legislation addresses how video lottery taxes are allocated respec- tively throughout Oregon’s 36 counties. Sponsored by several Ore- gon law-makers, including Wallowa County represen- tatives Senator Bill Hansell and Representative Greg Baretto, as well as politically infl uential advocacy groups like the Association of Ore- gon Counties and the Ore- gon Economic Association, House Bill 2320 should have some momentum behind it. The law’s intent is to enable local economic development initiatives — something Wallowa County could sorely use. According to the Association of Oregon Counties, each was “sup- posed to receive 2.5 per- cent of the net value lottery receipts.” But for about eight years Oregon counties were shorted their fair share…. To the tune about $5.1 million, according to the Association of Oregon Counties. For a rural community like Wallowa County, any extra fi nancial resources can go a log way. While Wal- lowa County and its coun- terparts through the state did receive some money, it doesn’t take much imagina- tion to wonder what the fully intended benefi t might have provided. The Association of Ore- gon Counties tracked how local governments were able to invest in economic devel- opment in 2018 even with- out full funding. Locally, Wallowa County has used its funds to “sup- port local groups and busi- FOR THE RECORD 8:23 p.m. – Single motor vehicle accident in rural Enterprise.
