Karen Frentress
March 3, 1943 — March 13, 2019
George Ballard left the Pub at the Boise V.A. Medi-
cal Ctr., for the last time March 7, 2019, after a long bat-
tle with Multiple Myeloma & End Stage Renal disease.
Many thanks to the V.A. and the local medical commu-
nity that lovingly participated in
prolonging his life.
George was born in Hel-
ena, Montana March 1, 1943. He
attended Helena High School,
graduating with the Class of 1961.
He & his dad, “Bud” Ballard, built
the Circle C Ranch, at the foot of
McDonald Pass, for the Carson
family. Later he and his dad built
the grand stand and managed the
George Ballard
horse track at the Helena Fair-
grounds. The on-site pond would
later be named “The Bud Ballard Memorial Duck Pond.”
George served in the United States Army beginning in
August of 1961 and attended the Engineering School at
Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. He was awarded The Good Conduct
medal and won Expert (Rifl e) & Sharpshooter (Carbine)
ribbons prior to his Honorable discharge August of 1964.
His Army engineering knowledge served him well in
helping/perfecting New Holland Tractor in the develop-
ment of the fi rst Round Baler. During his storied career
saving the butts of local ranchers, in the agricultural busi-
ness, George met and married the love of his life, Jennifer
Harrington, on May 30, 1993.
Always active in the community, George served unself-
ishly as Joseph City Councilman for nearly 10 years, Wal-
lowa County Republican Central Committee Precinct
Person, was a Joseph volunteer fi refi ghter, member Wal-
lowa County Kiwanis, VFW, American Legion, Enter-
prise Lions & Enterprise Elks. He was also a member of
the NRA, Wallowa County Trail Riders, an original vol-
unteer member of the Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race,

Eagle Cap Excursion Train Conductor, as well as the Offi -
cial Santa for the annual Santa Train.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Meredith J.
Ballard, of Duck Creek, Montana and Francis Nash, of
Butte, Montana.
George is survived by his wife, Jenny Ballard, daugh-
ters Julie and Jeanine Moats, step-sons and daughter Ken
Lander, Atom Cannizzaro and Cheryl Hutcheson, as well
as his brother, Jim Ballard and sister Rosalie Dedmore
and multitudes of friends whose lives he touched and
enriched.
A Celebration of George’s life will be held this sum-
mer, so that friends & family may attend at the VFW in
Enterprise Oregon. Date and time to be announced.
Karen Frentress died March 13, 2019, 10 days after
celebrating her 76th birthday. She was surrounded by the
thoughtful caring members of the Wallowa County Medi-
cal Profession and her family and friends.
She was born Karen Rae Por-
ter in Portland, OR, March 3, 1943
to Kathryn McConnell and Comer
Charles Porter. Her family moved
to Clackamas where she gradu-
ated from Clackamas Elemen-
tary School and continued with
the same classmates to Clackamas
High School being in the fi rst class
to go 4 years and graduate. In 1960,
she married Darrel Frentress and
Karen Frentress
had 3 children. Her marriage ended
in 1964, but the two ran a success-
ful Interstate Trucking business that fulfi lled Karen’s dream
of sending her children to college.
In addition to her career in bookkeeping and dispatching,
Karen coached her daughter’s All-Star Softball team and
served as a Boy Scout Den mother and Girl Scout leader.
After caring for her parents until their deaths, Karen was
able to add a chapter to her own life. A lover of the outdoors,
nature and family, she moved to Wallowa County to run a
small farm, be near her daughters, and be a part of grand-
children’s lives. In Enterprise, Karen enjoyed being a care-
taker of and spending time with her beloved grandchildren;
she also became involved in 4-H. Always a champion of
animals, Karen fi lled her hours with horses, goats, dogs, and
other small animals. She was also an avid gardener with a
beautiful yard full of fl owers, trees and plants.
Beema, as she was known to her family and friends,
loved books and birds, little children and living creatures,
music, red licorice and popcorn.
Karen is survived by her 3 children, Julie Gomes
(spouse-Ed Gomes), Jim Frentress, and Jennifer Frentress
(spouse- Guillaume Gendre), her cousin Kathy Menden-
hall (a sister to her from the time they summered together
as young children), grandchildren — Casey, Charles,
Christina, Michael, and Cole, great grandchildren – Phoe-
nix, Paxton, Chase and Piper (coming April 2019). At her
request, there will be no funeral or service. Those wishing
to make a donation in honor of Karen may do so to Wallowa
County Humane Society.
