BROWN BAG PROGRAM
THE BIG READ
Ralph and his Model T
‘A Wizard of Earthsea’
book discussion
Local engineer and long-
time Ford collector Ralph
Swinehart will be the Brown
Bag program at the Josephy
Center for Arts and Cul-
ture on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
The program is at noon, but
come early or stay late and
look at the exhibit of pre-
World War II photos of the
Wallowa country.
There are no Model T’s in
the exhibit, but Ralph prom-
ises pictures, and an inter-
esting account of the early
automobile industry from
a Ford point of view--from
the early 1900s to WW II
and the Henry Ford’s Ford-
son Tractor.
Brown Bag lunches at the
Josephy Center are free and
open to the public. Bring
your lunch or not; we’ll
have a cup of coffee for you.
For more information,
contact Rich Wandschnei-
der at 541-432-0505.
Fishtrap hosts a noon
book
discussion
on
Wednesday, Feb. 20 as part
of The Big Read’s celebra-
tion of Ursula K. Le Guin’s
classic novel, “A Wizard
of Earthsea.” A light lunch
will be provided as partici-
pants discuss main themes
in the book including the
journey into self, dragons,
and the language of fan-
tasy. The event is located
at the Fishtrap house: 400
E. Grant St. in Enterprise.
“We’re
scheduling
more Big Read events
during daylight hours
this year.” says Fishtrap’s
Mike Midlo, “Many peo-
ple can’t attend evening
events but still want to par-
ticipate in The Big Read.
So we’re offering two spe-
cial programs during the
lunch hour including this
book discussion at Fish-
trap. I hope people come
with their ideas and ques-
tions about ‘A Wizard of
Earthsea.’”
The Big Read Book
Discussion is part of six
weeks of events surround-
ing the novel, “A Wizard of
Earthsea,” which is cited as
“the best young adult novel
of all time,” by Entertain-
ment Weekly. Other Big
Read events include a
movie night featuring the
Disney fi lm, “Brave,” spe-
cial guests, and a Wizard’s
Feast Finale on March 19.
All events are free and
open to the public. Go to
Fishtrap.org for the full
schedule.
The Big Read broad-
ens our understanding of
the world, our communi-
ties, and ourselves through
the joy of sharing a good
book. Every winter, Fish-
trap celebrates one great
work of literature by pro-
viding events, discussions,
and free books to Wallowa
County schools, librar-
ies, and community mem-
bers. The program is an
initiative of the National
Endowment for the Arts
and is supported locally by
neighborhood businesses
and individual donations.
Special thanks to com-
munity sponsors Commu-
nity Bank, Pacifi c Power,
and the Oregon Arts
Commission.

Period. This is the theme
for Jada Gray, Rosie Mov-
ich-Fields, and Savanna
Vaughn’s Enterprise High
School FCCLA project.
They decided to raise funds
for Days for Girls, an inter-
national nonprofi t that “...
increases access to menstrual
care and education by devel-
oping global partnerships,
cultivating social enterprises,
mobilizing volunteers, and
innovating sustainable solu-

tions that shatter stigmas and
limitations for woman and
girls.”
They learned that many
girls in developing coun-
tries miss a week or more of
school every month because
they do not have the men-
strual supplies they need.
They set a goal to raise
enough money to purchase
ten menstrual kits, which cost
$25 a piece for materials and
distribution. To reach their
goal, the girls put on a raffl e,
where tickets and donations
exceeded their goal, raising
$277 which they sent to Days

donations from Gypsy Java,
Jake Kurtz, Wild Carrot and
family members.
The second part of their
project is to better under-

resources and supplies. They
plan to submit a proposal
to the school board to fund
