A14 SPORTS Wallowa County Chieftain Wednesday, January 1, 2020 Grapplers’ recovery at Joseph girls hit speed bumps on western trail Pomeroy tournament By Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain By Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain Both Enterprise and Joseph/Wallowa wrestling suffered a spate of injuries and flu victims that rendered both squads nearly member- less for a time. Pomeroy’s Dec. 27-28 Christmas tourna- ment showed both squads are well on the way to recovery. The Eagles brought six wrestlers to the meet, scoring 74 points and a sixth place finish among the 17 teams attending. Lute Ramsden scored a silver medal at 126 pounds after finishing off two of three opponents while Ken- nisen Knifong placed fourth at 145 pounds. Knifong wrestled five matches at the tournament. The upper brackets saw Jonah Staigle taking the gold after besting all-com- ers at 220 pounds. None of his matches lasted more than a minute, with the last one taking 36 seconds for the victory. “They all did good and they all wrestled hard,” Kiesecker said. “They all did as well as I expected them to do.” The Outlaws brought five wrestlers and scored 51.5 points for an eighth-place fin- ish. Trace Evans, wrestling at 138 pounds, not only walked away with the gold, but also won the Outstanding Wres- tler Award for the 106 pounds to 145 pounds group. Freshman Cody Fent reentered action after an injury hiatus and took third in the 132 pounds bracket with a 3-1 tournament perfor- mance with all his wins com- ing by fall. The Joseph Charter School girls basketball team took a three-game road trip west that proved an exhausting adventure for the squad. The Eagles went 1-2 on the journey that started Thursday, Dec. 26, versus Dufur. The ladies cruised to an easy, 46-29 win over the Rangers. Coach Lance Homan said the Eagles played well. “We played a very solid game against Dufur,” he said. “It was nice to see our kids come out of Christmas ready to play. Dufur was a very ath- letic team, but we were able to bring a lot of energy and take care of business.” Supernatural Sabrina Albee nailed the rim for 30 points while Camille Cren- shaw cashed in with eight of her own. Friday saw the Eagles getting plundered ver- sus the Perrydale Pirates squad. The ladies flew to earth on the bottom end of a 33-25 defensive contest. Homan said the Eagles had their work cut out for them against the athletic Pirates, who stifled the Eagles with high pressure and forced the ladies to miss a number of shots. Still, they battled on. “I was proud of how hard our kids fought until the end,” Homan said. Albee led the scor- ing with 14 while Brianna Micka added five points to the cause. Top-ranked St. Paul wasn’t any more benevolent toward the ladies as they put the Eagles to the sword, 41-22. Coach Homan said it was easy to see how the Buckaroos are tops in the state although the Eagles’ defensive plan of sagging in worked pretty well. “They are just so big and strong underneath that we could not keep them off the offensive boards,” he said. Wallowa Cougar girls split weekend games at Echo By Ellen Morris Bishop Wallowa County Chieftain The Wallowa Cou- gar girls split their games at Echo with a win and a loss. On Friday night they dropped their game to the Echo team, by a relatively close score of 36-40. High scorers for the Cougars: Jamie Johnston with 15 points and Shanna Rae Til- lery with 11. “Our lack of practice showed, and that is on me,” said coach David Howe. “We did a lot of good things but our timing just wasn’t there offensively or defensively.” The game with Ione/ Arlington on Saturday was an entirely different fla- vor. The cougars won going away, by a score of 51-30. Jamie Johnston scored 19. Shanna Rae Tillery hooped 10 points. “I guess we just needed to shake off the rust last night, Howe said. “The girls came out with a lot of determination to be better today and we were. We are still growing, and I look for- ward to see what we can do by the end of the season.” Wallowa County Chieftain CLASSIFIEDS Find classifieds at www. wallowa .com To place your ad visit www.wallowa.com or call 541-426-4567 Chieftain Location Business Hours Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm 209 NW 1st Street Enterprise, OR 97828 Call or Fax Advertising Deadlines Phone: 541.426.4567 Fax: 541.426.3921 Include name, phone number and address Classified liners• Mondays, 10 a.m. Display ads • Fridays, 5 p.m. Legals • Mondays,10 a.m. AD DEADLINES : CLASSIFIED LINERS, 10 a.m. MONDAY • DISPLAY ADS, 5 p.m. FRIDAY • LEGAL NOTICES, 10:00 a.m. MONDAY 631 For Rent 3BR, 2BA house, Joseph.
