Christmas roll call of the Red Cross extended OUT OF THE PAST Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins 100 years ago December 26, 1918 An extension of ten days has been given to Pacific coast states to complete the Christmas roll call of the Red Cross. Every town and district in Wallowa county is behind last year’s mem- bership figures; the five towns reported only about 2300 members, against 3500 listed last year. One of the objects set before the Wallowa county farm bureau for next year is good roads. This was brought before the annual meeting of the bureau by Fred W. Falconer and was met by hearty approval from those present. In the hope of escaping the third wave of the influ- enza which is now sweeping over the country, the lid was clamped down tighter than ever in Enterprise this week. Public meetings are for- bidden and the city posted placards signed by Dr. C. A. Ault, city health officer, bearing this injunction: “No loafing or lounging. Trans- act your business and go.” These have been placed in stores, pool halls, the post office and depot and wher- ever people naturally gather. 70 years ago December 23, 1948 Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Evans set out for Flora Mon- day morning after spending the weekend in town, but were blocked by snow drifts two miles from town and had to leave the car and walk the rest of the way. Snow about three feet deep on the level was reported with drifts across the highway. Approximately 100 gift boxes, which were packed in the various schools of the county, were mailed this week to children in foreign countries by the Junior Red Cross. Another shipment will be sent in the near future. The Wallowa County Grain Growers has been shipping grain the past week – the first shipments out of the county since prior to the beginning of harvest last summer. The embargo on grain shipments arising out of the glut in the termi- nal markets due to the mari- time strike was only recently lifted. 50 years ago December 26, 1968 Pfc. Terry L. Decker, who is serving with the 7th Infantry Division Artil- lery, Headquarters Bat- tery, in Korea, has been commended by his com- manding colonel as the 7th Infantry Division Soldier of the Month for Decem- ber, 1968. Governor McCall’s office has just released a comprehensive report which reveals many inter- esting facts about Wal- lowa County: County pop- ulation is 6,000 of which 32.5% are of school age, 41.8% are in the labor force and 12.5% are over the age of 65. The average per- sonal income per capita is $2056. Only 6% of the res- idents over the age of 25 have graduated from col- lege. (The state average is 8.5%.) Wallowa county had only 23 reported crimes per 10,000 population com- pared to a state average of 150. The accidental death rate is twice the state aver- age – 126.4 per 100,000 population compared to a state average of 64.4. A crew of about 20-30 people gathered at the Wallowa County Com- munity Action Center to put the finishing touches on the Christmas baskets. Included were Irene Pratt, Shandon Towers, Bill Bar- nett, Marge Noregaard, LeRoy McGraw and Kirk McGraw. 25 years ago December 23, 1993 For the 25th (or so) year, ladies of the VFW Auxiliary wrapped boxes in cheer- ful holiday wrap for the Elks Christmas Basket pro- gram to be filled with food and gifts and distributed to households in the county in need of a little extra help in celebrating Christmas. The women who wrapped about 250 boxes were Elf Bissinger, Brenda Jones, Bessie Stickney, Agnes Roberts, Lauretta Cross, Rosie Reynolds and Bessie Rynearson. Tyson Shirley notched still another standout per- formance for the JHS wres- tling team last weekend, battling his way to the 130- pound championship at the Grant Union Invitational Tourney at John Day. Ray Larsen of the EHS wrestling team took first place in his 148-pound weight division at the Union Tourney. Willie Zollman and Carey McCleary of the EHS wrestling team were champions in their weight classes at the Mac Hi Invi- tational wrestling tourney in Milton-Freewater. Tyler Scott Crow, 7, was among a large crowd of Wallowa/Lostine area chil- dren on hand to greet Santa Claus Saturday afternoon when he rolled into Wal- lowa on the Wallowa fire truck. Santa was assisted in passing out candy and oranges by Wallowa elf Hubert Crow. ELECTRICAL & PLUMBING SUPPLIES ELECTRICAL & WATER SYSTEM CONTRACTOR PUMPS • IRRIGATION HARDWARE• APPLIANCE PARTS 208 S.
