First ‘Literacy
Night’ draws
a crowd
STORY AND PHOTOS BY PAUL WAHL, CHIEFTAIN EDITOR
Nearly 200 students jammed into the multipurpose room at
Enterprise Elementary Oct. 23 for the first-ever Title I Literacy
Night event. Students were treated to a wide variety of experi-
ences encouraging reading, spelling and vocabulary.
Under the direction of Kelly Brown, Title I Reading Special-
ist for Enterprise, the event included community resources such
as Building Healthy Families, Eastern Oregon University, Uma-
tilla-Morrow Head Start and Enterprise Library.
Children went station to station with a bright pink “passport”
in their hands. Each child who received a stamp at each was pre-
sented with a free book.
Brown said she was thrilled at the response to the event, con-
sidering it has never been held previously, and is looking forward
to next year’s event.
Title I funds aim to bridge the gap between low-income stu-
dents and other students. The U.S. Department of Education pro-
vides supplemental funding to local school districts to meet the
needs of at-risk and low-income students.
Flyswatters ar-
en’t always for swatting flies as Collin Sullivan and Char-
lie Farner discovered at the Enterprise Elementary literacy
night. The object of the game was to “swat” the correct word
as it was being described. Great hilarity ensued throughout
the evening.  Nikolas Komiskey, left, Nathan Lamb and
Bradly Brown take their turn creating words at one of the
learning stations at the Enterprise Elementary Title I Literacy
Night Oct. 23.  Emily Aase, left, Heidi Follet and her moth-
er Sarah, took a turn at playing an adapted game of “Bog-
gle.”  Jax Norman selects the perfect colored pencil to be-
gin his decoration of a book mark.
