Alphornist Bruce Coutant of Enterprise creates mellow sounds from
his hand-crafted instrument during Saturday night’s performance at
Oregon’s Alpenfest. Coutant also manufactures alphorns and is be-
lieved to be the only person doing so in the United State.
Byron White and his daughter Stacy Marshelle pump up
the brass section for a Polkatones performance Satur-
day evening. White is the patron of the group, perform-
er, sound man and manager. The band is a regular at Al-
penfest.
Attendees at Saturday night’s performance of Oregon’s Alpenfest 2018 practice their Schunkeln, a certain rhyth-
mic movement to the beat of a song in which participants link arms and sway side to side on the spot.
Randy and Ashley Thull of Kewaskum, Wisc., demon-
strate polka dancing during the opening ceremonies of
Oregon’s Alpenfest Thursday at the courthouse gazebo.
When not touring, the Thull family –– four children –– op-
erates a dairy farm.
