A2 Announcements wallowa.com October 3, 2018 Wallowa County Chieftain OBITUARIES Glenna Smith June 11, 1922 –– Sept. 23, 2018 Willa Mae O’Rourke May 30, 1927 –– Sept. 25, 2018 Glenna Lucile (Hendrix) Smith passed away at 96 in La Grande. A Celebration of Life will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Halfway Lions Club Community Hall, 235 Lion Street, Halfway. A Reception will follow at Wild Bills at 3 p.m. She was born on June 11, 1922, to John and Myrtle (Ritter) Hendrix in Halfway. She married Charles (Chub) Smith Sept. 25, 1939 in Weiser, Idaho. They had three daughters, Charlaine, Joyce, and Marilyn. She lived in Halfway her entire life except for a few years during World War II. Glenna worked at the grocery stores in Halfway before becom- ing a bookkeeper at a garage and shipping business. Later she and Chub purchased the business and changed the name to Smith’s Garage. Glenna and Chub retired in 1986 and planned on relaxing and traveling. They were able to make a train trip across Canada, tour the New England states and a trip to Disneyland before Chub became ill and passed away in 1988. After Chub passed, Glenna spent a lot of her time enjoying her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who lived in Wal- lowa County. Glenna became grandma to their friends, too, which brought her great joy. Glenna loved rodeo, attending all the local ones and traveling to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas more than 20 times. The last time she was 88 years young. Among her many achievements were her beautiful flowers and garden. She was the overall sweepstakes winner at the Baker County Fair in Halfway for many years. Glenna was never done until she had more than100 exhibits, flowers, vegetables, canning, baking, crocheting and even photography. Glenna was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Pine Valley Presbyterian Church and a Mother Adviser for the Order of Rainbow for Girls Glenna was a wonderful mother and grandmother to all and an inspiration to live your life like you are always young. She leaves her three daughters and sons-in-law Charlaine and Ron Woollett, Halfway; Joyce and Dan Gover, Enterprise; and Marilyn and Rob Dalton, Joseph, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, her special friend and traveling partner Montey Johnston, nieces and neph- ews and her extended family members who were so special to her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Halfway Fair Exhibit Hall or a charity of choice through Coles Tribute Center, 1950 Place Street, Baker City, OR 97814. To light a candle in memory of Glenna or to leave a condolence for the family, please visit colestributecenter.com. Willa Mae O’Rourke, 91, of Joseph went to be with the Lord. Willa was born in Mon- ument, Ore., May 30, 1927, to LeRoy and Josephine Jones. She was the fourth of six chil- dren. She attended grammar and high school in Monument. She met Hillary Michael “Mike” O’Rourke in the spring and married March 9, 1947 while he was working for Peter Kewitts. Mike and Willa Mae settled just outside of Joseph, in 1955 where they still reside. They O’Rourke had three children Larry, Pat- rick and Mavis. Willa Mae worked in the ship yards in Portland in 1944 and Joseph High school Cafeteria. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, St. Katherine Catholic Church, she enjoyed her garden, lawn and cooking, handy work sewing and crocheting. Proceeded in death by parents, son Patrick, one sister and three brothers, she leaves behind her husband Mike, son Larry of LaGrande, daughter Mavis of Joseph and the loves of her life four grandchildren nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at St. Kather- ine Catholic Church with Interment of Cremains at the Joseph Cemetery. Hilderman Oct. 4, 1942 –– Aug. 24, 2018 Linda Mickey Hilderman was born in Montebello, Calif., and passed away after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Linda was the daughter of Bunnell Basil and Virginia Bar- rick, both deceased. She attended Los Altos High School and con- tinued her education at Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo, where she received a bachelor’s of science degree in horticulture. She married Lee Hilderman and they moved to Oregon and Hilderman operated a florist shop in Lake Oswego. They had two children, Lee and Sasha. Lee Sr. and Linda were divorced in 1976. Linda went on to attend Lewis and Clark College and obtained a master’s degree in counseling. In the fall of 1990, Linda met Harold Black on a Mazama hike. They shared a love of the outdoors, were married on the banks of the Wallowa River and moved to Wallowa County in 1994. Linda went to work for the Center for Wellness and retired from there in 2011. She then went to work at Arrowhead Chocolates and enjoyed the work and the people involved immensely. Linda enjoyed photography and was a member of the Wallowa Valley Photo Club. She also enjoyed horses, and although she hadn’t ridden much recently, was a member of the Wallowa Mountains Chapter of Oregon Equestrian Trails. She also was an active gardener and had a productive garden and greenhouse. She was on the board of the Wallowa County Farmers Market. She loved standard poodles and Indie and Ashe miss her. Linda traveled extensively and had visited every continent except Australia. In addition to Harold, Lee, and Sasha, Linda is survived by her sister, Donna Sampson of Grants Pass, Ore. There will be a celebration of Life for Linda the afternoon of Oct. 27 at the Hurricane Creek Grange 2:30-6 p.m. Earlier in the after- noon, 1-2:30 p.m., Linda’s ashes will be in the Wallowa Buddhist Temple’s meditation hall for those who would like to come by and silently reflect on her life. Memorial donations may be made to the Wallowa County Farm- ers Market or to the Wallowa Buddhist Temple. CORRECTION Candidate Dan R. DeBoie was listed in a story in last week’s edition as running for the Wallowa County Board of Commis- sioners Position 3 as a Republican, from information provided by the county. DeBoie contacted the Chieftain to say he is not run- ning as a Republican but as an independent. The Chieftain regrets the error.
