B1 WEDNESDAY October 3, 2018 Outlaw volleyball squad falls on HARD TIMES Paul Wahl/Chieftain Jada Gray plays tough offense. By Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain he Outlaws volleyball team suffered a three-match skid over the past week that saw the ladies fail to win a single set. The first match occurred on Sept. 27 with the Outlaws on their home court facing sec- ond-ranked Weston-McEwen, losing in straight sets. The first two sets were wipe outs with scores of 14-25 and 13-25 although the final set saw the Outlaws show some fire, which resulted in a respectable 23-25 showing. Bright spots for the ladies included the performances of Shelby Moncrief with 11 digs and senior Lexie Gassett’s out- standing 14 for 14 performance at the serving line. Coach Lisa Farwell noted the fine play of the opponents, which T forced the Outlaws to play in defensive mode for the majority of the match. She added that the offense never connected and net play was lacking. However, she saw positive attitudes. “We showed great improvement today in our communication as a team,” she said. “We kept our heads up the whole match and didn’t let our chins drop when we made an error. We need to con- tinue to build on this confidence.” The Outlaws next traveled to Pilot Rock to participate in that school’s tournament Sept. 29. The ladies faced Pilot Rock and the Grant Union Prospectors. The Rockets defeated the Outlaws in three sets by scores of 20-25, 18-25 and 21-25. Highlight performances included Gasset’s four kills, which were matched by Ashlyn Gray. Carsyn Miller contributed 10 digs to the cause. Coach Farwell said the ladies struggled with unforced errors, Wallowa volleyball team beats Imbler in 5 sets Wallowa Varsity Volley- ball team bested Imbler in five sets Sept. 25, 25-17, 21-25, 22-25, 25-21 and 15-9. Shannarae Tillery led with 34 digs and 16 kills including four solo blocks. Rylee Goller had 27 digs and 6 kills. Ashlyn Young had 24 digs with 31 assists. “This was a win that wasn’t possible without the total team effort,” said Coach Janea Hulse. “We started with a win in the first game and then lost the next two. The girls started playing timid and lost their confidence. “When the fourth game came, I finally started see- ing them come together and trust in themselves and each other.” After that win, the coin flip gave Wallowa the serve. “It was one point at a time,” Hulse said. “Defense was crucial. Our serve receive was the best that I’ve seen them do this season as a whole. which included 11 missed serves. “That’s 11 points we handed to Pilot Rock,” she said. “We also committed multiple serve-receive errors, and it’s difficult to win matches with stats like that.” The Prospectors flatly out-gunned the Outlaws in the final match of the week, winning in straight sets, 12-25, 15-25 and ral- lying for a hard-fought 24-26 loss. Once again, Gassett showed up to play with a 11 for 11 serving performance while Gray pounded out five kills and Moncrief shoveled out nine digs. Farwell noted Grant Union’s skill as a volleyball team for which the Outlaws had no defensive answer, particularly at the net. “We worked hard and played well, but when you’re playing probably the toughest team in the state, they will force you to make mistakes,” she said.
