Wallowa County Chieftain
OBITUARIES
Virginia Brooks Sasser
April 10, 1924 –– Aug. 5, 2018
Virginia Brooks Sasser was
born in Wallowa, to George and
Rae McGinnis Brooks. She grew
up on the McGinnis Ranch on
Powwatka Ridge.
She attended grade school at
the Powwatka School, which was
located on the ranch. She gradu-
ated from Wallowa High School
in 1942. She loved singing and
playing the piano. She was self-
taught and excelled in music.
After graduation, she worked
in Wallowa as a bookkeeper, and Sasser
then married Kenneth Sasser in
1947. In 1948, their son Steve was born. They lived in Milton-Free-
water and Wallowa, and then moved in 1960.
They settled in Roseburg, Ore., where Virginia worked as a book-
keeper, and Kenneth in the lumber industry. Virginia worked for Doug-
las County and was elected Douglas County Treasurer. She loved her
work and retired in 1984.
Virginia and Kenneth moved to Florence after retirement. They
spent their winters in Yuma, Ariz. Virginia loved the Yuma winters
and laughed about how different they were from winters on Pow-
watka Ridge.
Virginia really enjoyed visiting with family and attending her grand-
children’s school and athletic events. She also liked to vacation in
Hawaii.
She and Ken always came back to Wallowa for Memorial Day to
put flowers on family graves, attend the Wallowa High School reunions
and of course visit as many relatives and friends as possible.
Virginia had a great interest in Native American culture and espe-
cially Nez Perce history. She loved attending the powwows in Wal-
lowa and knew many of the participants.
After Ken’s death in 2000, Virginia moved to Salem, and then Port-
land, to be near family. She lived in a retirement community and par-
ticipated in their group choir and other events.
She was known as the piano-playing lady, and entertained com-
munity residents in to her 90s. Most people did not know she could
not read music and played everything by ear.
Virginia told the community residents about her love for Powwatka
and Wallowa County. She showed them her pictures and told them her
stories of growing up “in the woods,” as she said.
Virginia passed away in her apartment with family present. She was
preceded in death by Kenneth; her parents, George and Rae Brooks;
and her siblings, Wilma Guillory, Kenneth Brooks, Vera Jean Miller
and Nancy Brooks.
She is survived by her son, Steve Sasser (Kathleen); grandchildren,
Brooke Berry (Clint), Scott Sasser (Raquel), Matt Sasser (Dianna)
and Greg Sasser (Jenni); 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces
and nephews.
Virginia will be buried with her husband in the Wallowa Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wallowa History Center.
Janet Bullat
Jan. 10, 1943 –– Sept. 11, 2018
Janet Katherine Bullat was born in Palo Alto, Calif., and
passed away after battling cancer for just over a year.
The daughter of John and Katherine Axell, both deceased,
Janet attended Los Altos High School, graduating in 1960. She
continued her education at San Jose State University, majoring in
elementary education with a minor in home economics special-
izing in textiles.
During her time at San Jose State, she met her future husband,
Chris Bullat. After graduation, Janet moved to southern Califor-
nia to teach elementary school for a couple of years before marry-
ing Chris on July 2, 1966 and moving to Eugene, Ore.
In Eugene, Janet taught second and third grade at Howard Ele-
mentary for 5 years. She also volunteered her creative textile tal-
ents by teaching local 4-H students how to sew.
In 1971, Janet and Chris moved to Bend, Ore.. By November
1979, their daughter Amanda Bullat was born.
During her time in Bend, Janet supported Chris’s general con-
tracting business and helped him run an Orange Julius franchise
and Janeto’s Cafe, both in the Bend River Mall. She also devoted
her time to supporting Amanda in all her activities.
Janet was involved in the Central Oregon community as a vol-
unteer with the Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) program
at Tumalo Elementary, and as a member of the altar society at St.
Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Janet enjoyed participating in the women’s educational home
extension group Sun And Snow. She was also one of the original
food coordinators for the successful breast cancer awareness and
fundraising event, Heaven Can Wait.
In 2008, Janet and Chris moved to Joseph for the mountain
views and quiet life. Janet continued her community involvement
by volunteering at Enterprise Elementary reading with students
through originally the SMART program, volunteering with the
local Catholic Church and as a docent at the Josephy Center for
Arts and Culture.
In her spare time, Janet enjoyed camping with family, hiking,
traveling, sewing, cooking new recipes, capturing all the good
times with her camera, and making photo albums to keep the
memories alive for years to come.
In addition to Chris and Amanda, Janet is survived by a sis-
ter Carol Carlson of Bend, a brother John Axell of Salem, and a
handful of nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service in Enterprise, 11 a.m. Satur-
day, Oct. 6 at Catholic Church St Katherine, 301 E Garfield St,,
Enterprise. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Jan-
et’s memory to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in
Seattle, by calling 206-667-4399.
