Wallowa County Chieftain Community wallowa.com August 29, 2018 A3 Enterprise-Lewiston highway formally opens OUT OF THE PAST Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins 100 YEARS AGO Aug. 29, 1918 In a premature explosion of black powder on Big Sheep Creek last Thursday, Wil- liam Beaudoin was severely burned and cut about the face and hands, Grant Tucker was struck above the eye with a piece of flying glass, which cut a deep gash, and Fred Bird received minor injuries on his hands and face. Rich- ard Bird, a fourth member of the party, came out without a scratch. Backed by the judgment of a Nevada mining engineer, the men who recently filed on a large area of mineral land in the high mountains reached by the South Fork, are prepar- ing to begin development of the property. Postmasters have been instructed to receive appli- cations for enlistment in the U.S. Army from men who have passed their 46th birth- day and who have not yet reached their 56th birthday in any of the following staff departments: Medical, Signal Corps, Air Service and Quar- termaster Corps. 70 YEARS AGO Aug. 26, 1948 Several hundred peo- ple from Wallowa County are expected to drive over the new Enterprise-Lewiston highway Saturday to attend the program at Field Springs state park across the Grande Ronde river, marking the for- mal opening of the new high- way. The highway will be in reasonably good condi- tion barring heavy rains. It is reported, and persons who have already driven over the road state, that it is an unusu- ally scenic drive. Chief topic of conversa- tion among the sportsmen these days is the open season on cow elk in the Chesnim- nus and Minam river areas. Strong sentiment against the action of the state game com- mission in opening the season on cow elk in these areas has developed and a number of petitions are being circulated in opposition to the regulation and asking for a change lim- iting elk hunting in Wallowa county to bulls. The cookhouse and all contents at the Blue Mt. Pine Mill, owned by Frank Kes- sler, burned. Fire was caused by an overheated oil stove while the cook was preparing dinner.
