Henry Dunn was born in
Detroit, Mich., to Earle
George and Helen Lorraine
Lindhurst Dunn.
The family later moved
west. Bruce had lived in
Ashton, St. Anthony, Idaho
City, New Meadows and
McCall in Idaho before
coming to Enterprise 32
years ago.
He earned a bachelor
of science degree in forest
management from Michi-
gan Technological Univer- Dunn
sity and certification as a
logging system specialist with Oregon State University.
He also had earned a silvacultural certification from
Utah State University and had completed studies at the
graduate level.
He spent 32 years as a forester for R-Y Timber and had
worked for the U.S. Forest Service and spent a number of
years in private industry.
Bruce was actively involved in the community and
earned the “Unsung Hero” Award from the Wallowa
County Chamber of Commerce, which also honored him
for his civic leadership and his work in agricultural tim-
ber. He also received the President’s Award twice. He also
received the Oregon State University Extension Coopera-
tor Award.
He served on the Wallowa County Planning Commis-
sion, Wallowa County Economic Development Com-
mittee, Wallowa County Winter Recreation Committee,
Wallowa County Small Woodland Committee, U.S. For-
est Service Fire Overhead and Citizens Group, Wallowa
County Natural Resources Advisory Committee, Wal-
lowa County Nez Perce Tribe Salmon Habitat Recovery
Plan TMDL Committee and the Agriculture Water Qual-
ity Committee.
He had been a member of the Independent Order of
Odd Fellows for almost 50 years.
He enjoyed leather braiding and other leatherwork,
but his favorite pastime was being out in the woods. He
enjoyed bowling, target shooting, Detroit Lions football
and Detroit Red Wings hockey. He loved to play solitaire
and read. He was involved in ROTC during his college
years.
Bruce married Jane Elizabeth Robinson April 15, 1978,
in Medford, Ore., who survives him. He is also survived
by his mother-in-law, Annella Robinson, of Enterprise.
His mother and father preceded him in death.
An Irish wake and celebration of life is 5 p.m. Friday,
Aug. 31 at Cloverleaf Hall in Enterprise. Barbecue pork
and libations will be provided and side dishes are wel-
come, along with stories to share.
A scholarship fund has been established in Bruce’s
name for students studying natural resources. Donations
can be made to Wallowa Resources, 401 NE 1st St. Suite
A, Enterprise, OR 97828.

grandma, great grandma,
loyal friend and prayer war-
rior Lucy Helen Wood went
home to be with her Lord and
Savior, and join her husband
of 59 years, Roger Wood Sr.
She was born in Morgan-
town, Ind. Her parents lived
in the Tigard, Ore., area, and
she graduated Tigard High
School in 1958. She married
in 1959 to Roger Wood from
Lake Oswego, and the fam-
ily lived mostly in Sherwood,
Ore., for many years until
Wood
moving to Joseph in 1980.
They moved to Bend in
1991, then on to Prineville in 2004. In late 2017, she was diag-
nosed with pancreatic cancer, She left peacefully in the home of
her son and daughter in-law, Jeff and Heather Wood, who pro-
vided warm, loving and comforting care for her in Boring, Ore.
She is very much missed and will always be remembered
with all the wonderful memories. Her heart was always at the
Oregon Coast.
She loved the beach and would spend many days at one of
her favorite places close to Lincoln City, Ore. She was a very
thoughtful, giving, humble and very private person.
She requested no service or ceremony, but the family is
planning a very small gathering among close friends and fam-
ily in early spring. She leaves behind three sons and their
wives, 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, three
siblings and many friends and family members.
One of her favorite verses from the bible was Philippians
4:13: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
She fought a good fight, now she is truly at peace.
Bonnie Jean Laird Larson died in Portland. She was born in
Enterprise and considered Enterprise their hometown. It is with
heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of our beloved mom,
grandma, great grandma, mother-in-law, sister, aunt and friend.
Bonnie was born on The Slope in Enterprise to William Laird
and Ada Burge Laird, the third of six children. On July 5, 1941,
she married the love of her life, John Oliver Larson of La Grande
and gained another large loving family.
They were devoted to each other and were the true paragons
of a loving marriage. They soon moved to Portland and remained
there for the rest of their lives.
Mom was “lunch lady” at Sylvan and West Sylvan schools for
more than a decade and made all our food from scratch, includ-
ing soup, bread and ketchup. The irony is that she really didn’t
like to cook.
After retirement, she volunteered at St. Vincent’s Hospital on
the oncology ward, giving comfort to patient family members.
She also designed and sewed more than 1,000 Christmas stock-
ings for December newborns to be wrapped in for their going-
home, for which she was featured in an Oregonian article.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband John “Bud,”
son Jeffry John, her parents, sisters Winfred and Margery and
brothers Lynden and Ray, as well as all of daddy’s family.
She is survived by her daughter JoJean “Jody” Peters (Lewis
“Pete”), brother John Willard Laird (Francis), grandsons J. Evan
Madden (Yumiko) and Scott Madden, great-grandsons Paolo
Madden Zeffirelli, Kenzo Bryan Madden and Seiji Oliver Mad-
den and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was the kindest and gentlest person who ever walked
this earth. While we will miss her terribly, we know she is now
at peace with daddy and Jeff. A celebration of her Life will be
announced later.

wins career grant
Elizabeth Enslin of Enter-
prise was one of 24 artists who
received a Career Opportunity
Grant from the Oregon Arts
Commission, The Ford Fam-
ily Foundation and The Ore-
gon Community Foundation.

help pay for participation in a
workshop at the Postgraduate
Writers’ Conference at Ver-
mont College of Fine Arts in
Montpelier, Vermont.

Gavin Russell of Wal-
lowa will represent Wal-
lowa County this year at the
Oregon Statewide Spelling
Championship at the Oregon
State Fair in Salem Saturday,
Sept. 1.
This year, the event has 61
spellers coming from 27 coun-
ties in Oregon. Students com-
peting have won their school,
district and county written
spelling contests. This is the
tenth year Oregon Spellers has
sponsored the Oregon State-
wide Spelling Championship.
Summer is
in the air!
John Paul van Belle Jr, had lived in Enterprise since 1955. He
was born in Sunnyside, Wash., to parents John Paul Sr. and Alta
van Belle. Many people called him Johnny, but to his large circle
of relatives, he was known as “Junior.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty, brother
Jimmy and daughter-in-law Julie (Glen). He graduated from Sun-
nyside High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army March
1953 to April 1955, and was stationed in Germany the entire time.
He was married three times: Joanne Wallace, Janice Pratt and
Joann. He is survived by his wife Joann in Enterprise, his daugh-
ter Ellen Jones (Doug) of Hermiston, a granddaughter Nelle, son
Tom of Joseph, granddaughter Lisa and her two children, grand-
sons Cody, Joe and Jimmy, brother Charles (Buster) van belle
of Everett, Wash., sister Charlotte (Frank) Beard of Ellensburg,
Wash., and sister Ellen Pederson of Prosser, Wash.
He grew up in Outlook, Wash., in a rodeo family and was
cowboy to the core. An injury to his back stopped him from com-
peting, but he worked for van Belle Rodeo as a pickup man and
behind the chutes.
After his discharge from the Army, he and Joanne came to
Enterprise for a visit with relatives. They really liked the area and
moved here in 1955.
He was a rancher for many years, running cows in the Elk
Mountain, Joseph Creek, Shamrock Ridge and Flora areas.
He was well-known for telling stories. He liked to go to
Davis’s Café for coffee and spin stories and tell jokes with others.
He later migrated to the Cheyenne Café in Joseph for coffee and
to tell stories and lies (his words) with the folks there.
There will be no service. A memorial will be held at a later date.
