They will be put in the hands of dealers who will use one for each family. The purpose is to hold all families to the autho- rized allowance of two pounds per person per month. If the county will supply the labor, work on the Flo- ra-Enterprise government road will begin this fall and will be finished next spring. It will be constructed directly by the government, as no one offered to take the contract last spring when bids were requested. Two large audiences in the opera house Monday night heard the health message that Captain R.L. Russell brought from army headquarters. He spoke first to a mixed audi- ence on various preventable diseases and how the army has stamped them out. All together there were more than 30 people and close to 50 horses on the trip. 70 YEARS AGO Aug. 12, 1948 Wallowa County Pomona Grange met with Promise Grange Aug. 7. A resolution was adopted opposing the use of daylight saving time by some towns in the county while others are on standard time, making two time systems in the county. The arrangement is very confusing and incon- venient to farmers, members stated. The resolution asked all towns to go back to standard time. Thieves made a quick haul at the Caton Hotel during the momentary absence of the night clerk, Max Roberts, who was in the basement fixing the furnace. The robber(s) went into one of the downstairs rooms and seized two che- nille bedspreads, a table lamp and several bath towels. In the main lobby they made off with a table model radio and a vac- uum sweeper. Money in the cash registers was not touched. A large number of peo- ple were camped on the upper Imnaha over the weekend. Most of the campers were picking huckleberries, which are said to be quite numerous in the area. Several parties of Indians were also on the river. 1:27 p.m. –– A motorcycle crash was reported in rural Lostine. AUG. 2 7:39 a.m. –– Single vehicle roll- over was reported by a 911 caller in rural Enterprise. 8:56 a.m. –– A possible wolf depredation was reported in the Enterprise area. 11:58 a.m. –– A hit and run acci- dent was reported in Enterprise. 8:03 p.m. –– Theft of services was reported in Enterprise. Enterprise FD responded. 8:58 p.m. –– A single-vehicle 25 YEARS AGO Aug. 12, 1993 Earl Woodward and sons, Dick and Donald, were chosen by the Wallowa County Stock- growers as the Cattlemen of the Year. Kenneth Johnson was chosen by the cattlemen as the Grassman of the Year at the annual meeting. The annual 4-H and open class fair began Monday with excellent crowds attending all events. One of the first big events to take place was the 4-H horse show in which Carol Probert, Christy Kiser and Kathy Evans were judged the champion horsemen in their classes, and Beverly Poulson, Vicky Hyatt and San- dra Buckley were judged the champion horse showmen in their classes. Patti Quinn was named the grand champion in the clothing division and Linda Bissinger in the knitting division. Tuck Tucker and Mary Marks returned home Tuesday Sam Morgan Jr., of Enter- prise, set a new course record at Alpine Meadows Golf Course with a score of 62 on 18 holes. Tom Sheehy of Wallowa recited some of his cowboy poetry as part of the ice cream social and program sponsored by the Pomona Grange at the Wallowa County Fair. A lawsuit in which Ric Bai- ley of Joseph charged defama- tion of character against several defendants has been dismissed by Judge Eric Valentine. The order officially dismissed all charges against defendants Dennis Gratton of Boise, Dave Shriner of Joseph and the Wal- lowa County Chieftain and its editor Rick Swart. Enterprise High School FFA chapter member Benji Boyd gave his market steer a good bath Monday before going on to win the reserve grand cham- pion ribbon for FFA market steers.
