Harry “Jack” Harmon April 15 1920 - July 25 2018 Harry “Jack” Harmon, 98, of La Grande, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at his residence. A Graveside Service will be held at the Enterprise Cemetery, on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 10:00AM. Casual dress is preferred by the family. Jack was born on April 15, 1920 in his parent’s farmhouse in Leap, Oregon to Harry and Anna (Pettit) Harmon. He lived in Joseph, Enterprise, La Grande and Wallowa Lake, Oregon. He wintered in Yuma, AZ after retirement. Jack rode his horse to school in the Chapman District at Leap, Oregon. He attended 4-H Summer School in 1932 for 2 weeks in Corvallis, Oregon and graduated Enterprise High School in 1936 at the age of 16. He was married to Maxine Elizabeth McClain on March 16, 1941. Jack enlisted in the US Army in September of 1943 and served in the 6 th Infantry Division during World War II. He traveled aboard ship to Australia, New Guinea, The Philippines and later to Korea. He survived several beach landings in New Guinea. One of the many life-changing experiences during the war he recalled was the participation of his outfit in the liberation of nearly 500 American Prisoners of War at the Cabanatuan prison camp. He returned home to Maxine and baby Joan the day before Christmas, 1945. In 1936, Jack worked on a contract with his friend Henry Locke placing lath in the old EM & M building on Main St in Enterprise while it was being renovated into apartments. He made $.25 per bundle. He also worked for Bunting Tractor Company, First National Bank of Oregon, Mutch Motors, Mutch-Harmon Motors, Harmon Motors, Enterprise, Harmon Motors La Grande, First State Bank of Elgin. He retired to Wallowa Lake in 1987. Jack was an avid reader, sports fan from high school sports to professional sports; especially baseball. He loved gardening and raising tomatoes and mowed miles and miles of lawn at Wallowa Lake. He was a very adept card player who studied and enjoyed playing bridge with his wife Maxine as well as reigning over wild cribbage tournaments with his family and friends. Jack spent many happy years working with the players for the Shrine East-West Football Game, while they trained at E.O.U. Jack was awarded and recognized for Wallowa County Jaycees “First Citizen” Award in 1951 for distinguished service to his community and county including Wallowa County Softball Association, Boy Scouts, Tourist Promotion Committee for the Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise Lions Club. Other organizations which were recognized in the award were his participation in the Rifle Club which met in the basement of the EM&M Building, the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and the Community church where he was a deacon and also taught Sunday School. He was one of three Eastern Oregon men with Bill Carey and Bill Dobbin who started the Eastern Oregon College Foundation in 1966. He was awarded the Unsung Hero Award for 2003 presented by the Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce for a lifetime of volunteer service in Wallowa County, 60 Year Membership in the Masonic Lodge, Honorary Past Master of the Joseph Masonic Lodge and 50 Year Membership in the Scottish Rite. He was a member of 4-H, Lions, Rotary, Elks, Masons, Shrine Club, Scottish Rite, Eastern Oregon College Foundation Board, Wallowa Memorial Hospital Foundation, Wallowa County Museum Board. Although the achievements he has accumulated over the last ten decades is an amazing list, if Jack were to tell you what his real achievements were it would be raising a healthy family in Eastern Oregon with unconditional love, serving his country with honor, leaving a place better than he found it through fair-minded work and generous volunteering and the multitude of people gone before and left behind who called him a friend. Jack is survived by his children, Jean Talbott (Howard) of Portland, OR, Julie Hickerson (Jon) of La Grande, OR, Bill Harmon of La Grande, OR and son-in-law Leland Fager of Walla Walla, WA; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; niece, Lois Harmon of Enterprise; nephew, Richard Harmon of Estacada, OR and 1 great-great grandchild.
