The Josephy Center for Arts and Culture will host the opening of a new Wild Land- scapes series exhibit, “The Wild Landscape: Art and Words of the Zumwalt Prai- rie,” 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The content of the exhibit is also available for pur- chase as a paperback exhibit catalogue. The diverse exhibit includes poetry, essays, a sound-track and a short film; as well as paintings and pho- tographs. Twenty-five writ- ers and artists from around the northwest contributed including David Jensen, Les- lie LeViner, Jenner Hanni, Janie Tippett and Pamela Royes. The exhibit runs until Sept. 11. “Art and Words of the Zumwalt Prairie” offers a snapshot of The Nature Con- servancy’s Zumwalt Prai- rie Preserve in mid-June, the peak flowering season. To produce this exhibit, the art- ists and writers gathered June 16 to capture the landscapes, flowers, animals and essence of The Zumwalt. Their work depicts the wild nature of The Zumwalt Prairie Preserve and also con- siders the question of what “wild” means in landscape that has been influenced, harvested and managed by humans for millennia. “Zumwalt Prairie to the Seven Devils,” a watercolor painting by Leslie LeViner, is part of the “Arts and Words of the Zumwalt Prairie” exhibit at Josephy Center. The exhibit catalogue includes all paintings and photographs in the exhibit, as well as the full text of poems, essays and stories; and introductions by The Nature Conservancy’s Jeff Fields and exhibit cura- tor Ellen Morris Bishop. It is available as a paperback book for $15. Artist Jakob Haßlacher will be donating a painting to help raise funds for Jose- phy’s art-education program. The painting will be up for silent auction during the exhibit. The exhibit was funded by the Collins Foundation and Ann Werner. The Kins- man Foundation supported publication of the exhibit cat- alogue and The Nature Con- servancy sponsored the art- ists’ time on their preserve. U.S. Forest Service has implemented Phase B Pub- lic Use Restrictions on the Malheur, Umatilla and Wal- lowa-Whitman National For- ests due to high fire danger, the potential for human caused fires and concern for public safety. The increased restrictions pertain to the use of campfires, smoking, chainsaws, inter- nal combustion engines and generators. Campfires will only be allowed in designated camp- grounds and recreation sites. Liquefied or bottled gas stoves and heaters are allowed for cooking and heating. Operating an internal com- bustion engine, such as a chain- saw, is prohibited. Generators will only be allowed in the center of an area at least 10 feet in diameter that is cleared of all flamma- ble material or when fully con- tained within a pickup truck bed that is devoid of all flam- mable material. Factory-in- stalled units in a recreational vehicle where the generator exhaust discharge is located in the center of an area at least 10 feet in diameter that is cleared of all flammable material is also allowed. Smoking is only allowed within enclosed vehicles, buildings and developed recre- ation sites or when stopped in an area cleared of all flamma- ble material. As a reminder, travel restrictions prohibit motor vehicles traveling off desig- nated forest roads and trails, except for the purposes of going to or from campsites located within 300 feet of an open road.
